Food apparently has too much protein, causing upset tummy, what should I swithc to?

What breed is beau? Does he need a large breed food?

He is a German Shorthaired Pointer and currently 45-50lbs at 6 months, as per the vet he will be 60-65 lbs

Maybe Canidae all life stages?

Is it a recently opened bag of food?  If so it could be a quality control issue.

First, I wouldn't do the large breed food. I don't think a 60-65 lb dog needs it.
 
As far as food brand goes, you may have to try many different types to see which brand he does best on. Some dogs handle different foods better than others.

I feed Canidae and my dogs didn't do well on Inova. However, my brother feeds Wellness and his dog didn't do well on Canidae. These are all good quality foods (in my opinion) So, you have to try different brands to see what works best for your dog. Every dog is different.

I recommend trying the Eagle Pach Holistic line of food. My three go nuts for it and their poop is small and firm and their coats  are amazing.I  forget: How old is Beau now?

Just try a different brand; try to find something with at least 26% protein that doesn't have corn gluten listed as one of the first three or four ingredients. Nature's variety, Innova, Chicken soup, Candidae, Timberwolf organics are all fine choices.
 
Stay out of Petsmart, though, because most Petsmarts don't carry any of the really good brands. I wouldn't recommend feeding Euk. large breed to any puppy-- at 0.8% it has insufficient calcium to support proper bone development.

The petsmart by me carry's all of those brands except TimberWolf. I think it varies by store. Best bet would be to find the food website then locate by store and see which is closest to you.

But anyways...high protein isn't usually the cause for diarrhea, it's the high fat that is associated with it.  Usually when a dog is having a "reaction" to a high protien food, it results in constipation and gas.

Other than that, I would recommend Canidae ([linkhttp://www.canidae.com/]http://www.canidae.com[/link]), Innova Large Breed ([linkhttp://www.innovapet.com/products/default.asp?id=1260]http://www.innovapet.com/products/default.asp?id=1260[/link]), or Eagle Pack Holistics ([linkhttp://www.eaglepack.com/]http://www.eaglepack.com[/link]).  If you must get your food from Petsmart, I would choose Blue Buffalo or Royal Canin MAXI formulas ([linkhttp://www.royalcanin.us/]http://www.royalcanin.us[/link]).  If you must get the food at a large store and have access to Petco (preferable over Petsmart), I would look at Natural Balance Ultra Premium ([linkhttp://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/]http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com[/link]) or Solid Gold if they have it ([linkhttp://www.solidgoldhealth.com/]http://www.solidgoldhealth.com[/link]).

ACTUALLY it doesnt matter as I dont feed him canned or moist Eukanuba....if you read the list that is all that was recalled. The vets office also said that the dry is fine.  I have added rice to his food each day and it has resulted in normal stools again

Rice is a soluble fiber and is known to stabilize the digestive tract, both for humans and dogs.  Just because your dog does better with rice in the diet does not mean that the food was too high in protein.  The food probably just overall didn't agree with him.

...in Oct or Nov. Recently his stools became soft and eventually lead to Diahrea. After fecals etc no parasites found so he went on E/N and metro to treat. As soon as we started mixing his regular food back in...soft again. So as per the vets office suggestion I tried mixing some rice in to see if he needed more carbs, and was getting too much protein by chance..before trying a bunch of diff foods. So sure enough over night....better stools...they are now the right color and firmer. So...what food should I switch too?

 
Iv been in the VERY same boat as you!!! I just got done switching my Scotties back to Natural Balance Duck and Potato cause I had put them on Duck and Potato by Fromm and they had soft stools which never ever happens to Alley. Now Max ..yes cause he is my IBD dog but I didn't need any extra problems in that area so I just got done switching them back to NB and they are back to normal.
 
My Westies were on Royal Canin mini and Loving it... But there stools were nothing but soft serve and when I went to scoop it ....it went to mush[:'(]
So we all know what happens next when a a dog doesn't have a consistant firm stool then they have Anal gland problems.
 
So like you I started adding stuff... canned pumpkin... fiber powder and other stuff and then I thought to myself... Hello... this is rediculous that Im having to do all this because the food isn't working.
 
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I went with a new food for the Westies... Its called Kumpi ... Well to of My Westies have taken nicely to it But Zoey is still wanting her Royal Canin....
 
This is what I wrote the owner of the company to update her on how the dogs were doing...
 
Anyway finally the dogs poop is all getting back to normal and life is good  I will keep you posted on the progress of my dogs. Since taking Mattie off Natural Balance dog food her stained beard and eye's that were so rusty are almost completely gone. Now will see if the feet chewing stop on Kumpi. If so she will be completely fixed  I will Add that since I took Zoey off Natural Balance she is like a teenager again. Mike was shocked by her energy level and her wanting to get up in the morning. Hubby gets up at 4:30 am and it was like lighting a bomb under Zoey to get her to go out to potty. (can't say I blame her at that hour)  but since changing her diet she would pop right up and ready to go. She has more energy than the other 4 and she is 11 years old. Anyway since being on Royal Canin she is a new dog so I HOPE that continues on Kumpi. I guess the reason why Im sharing is that I don't think people realize how much nutrition effects our dogs and the way they age and act. Just like people. I did get my Scotties back on Natural Balance Duck and Potato and there poop is perfect again. So I guess that agrees with those two very well. One has IBD the other Alley with all the health issues and allergies. _______________Okay since writing that everyone is doing good but Zoey... The switch put her tummy and gut into runny stools so Iv got her on Metronidazole and probicin and Im making the switch with her... Poor girl.. she loved Royal Canin so much but again... Full Anal glands and scooting .... Anyway I will get her feeling better and get her completely on the new food. I can only imagine how working with one dog would be... EASY[] Try getting it right with 5 dogs....[8D] enough to make you batty and a poop expert really quickly...
