They really do love the raw bones. Since I started giving Jessie raw soup(knuckle) bones she won't chew rawhides anymore.  I think the bones are better for her.

the only problem i have with them is that its really messy until she chews all the meat off of it, and she carries it all over the house.  how can i get her to chew it in one spot?  i dont want raw meat germs all over my furniture and blankets and carpet and everything.  and we dont have a fenced yard so just keeping bones outside isnt an option, we live in an apartment.

Jessie chews hers outside in the yard. I know that some members have trained their dog to chew the bone on a sheet which they wash afterwards. Do you have a crate for your dog? You could crate your dog while she chews the bone. Maybe you could get a baby gate and use it to keep your dog in the bathroom while she chews the bone and wash the floor afterwards.

no she doesnt have a crate, maybe ill hafta get one to use just for that, i dont know how she would handle it tho.....

i could buy a baby gate and try the bathroom thing but shed probly just jump over it, shes a really good leaper, shes moves like a cat.  and i couldnt close the door she would feel seperated from me and FREAK out.

Do you think you could train her to stay on a sheet while she chews her bone?

thats a good idea, yesterday i was trying to show her to only chew on it in the kitchen , i also tried a placemat, but do you have any tips on HOW to train her to do this?  i tried just taking the bone every times she leaves the designated area and just putting it back and saying "kitchen"  but didnt get it at all.

She didn't get it, yet. She will. Every time she moves it, take it away and put it back where it belongs:)

I know this board hasn't been posted on in a while, but...
I've been debating on feeding my dog raw bones. The only problem is that his immune system may not be that strong, and he is a bit of an older dog. Would he be okay with them?

Doggy_lover it might be a good idea to start a new thread asking any questions you may have and outlining all of your dogs problems, age etc. You'll get alot more detailed responses that way [sm=happy.gif]

i would not feed raw meat or bones to an immune comprimised dog.

MAY not be that strong or IS not strong? Just because a dog is old does not necessarily mean his immune system is not naturally up to par. Besides we dont know how old this dog actually is.... I spoke to a lady the other day who said her dog wouldnt be able keep up with the younger ones anymore as he was elderly,i asked how old he was,and she said 5 [8|] Obviously not elderly, and he had no problems keeping up with the other dogs!!

This why i advised you to start a new thread,as no-one can advise you properly from the little information you have given.

if you dont want to start a new thread, you could just post more info on this one )

Willow has had many illnesses and low white blood cell counts in the past so no raw meat and bones for her.  If your dog truly has any issues from a compromised immune system then I wouldn't do it.  Also, I'm not sure I'm so into the idea of an older dog all of a sudden getting raw meat.  If she/he has gotten it throughout it's life then I'd think it would be fine but something about just introducing it after all this time doesn't sit right with me.  I think it could cause a lot of problems.
