Orijen

they've been on EP for 2 mths alrdy but on different formula. there is one problem i am considering is that Orijen has much more protein than EP, so i am not sure if it is good for my pug who is overweight

I have Pugs, and they have all been on the Evo. Only two of my Pugs gained weight, so I put them on the RF Evo. Does Orijen have a reduced fat like Evo? That might work if you Puggie gains too much weight. The reason I couldn't keep my guys on the Evo, too many had loose stools, from regular Innova too. Timberwolf WN, never had loose stools. I would love to try Orijen, but waiting until I can buy it locally.

i dont think Orijen has reduced weight formula. my pug is not freaking fat lol, he is like 22-23 lbs right now. he lost some weight before, but recently gained back a little bit. i may put him on Innova reduced fat formula, then put my goldie on Orijen. i heard that some dogs who r on evo have loose stool. i'll see how my pug is doing on Evo then.

Wow, that's looks so good I might even pick some up next time I go to Canada. They are all the same formulas wherever you go, right?

Just wanted to dig up this old thread to say that I bought a bag and love it so far! I've only been feeding it about a week, but the stools look great, the dogs love it, and I am noticing less doggie odour. Especially with Loki, since at his previous home, he was being fed costco brand stuff. Tojo was eating innova, so he didn't smell bad, but now he's even more odour free. How lovely!

Their fish variety will be available soon.  I think I'll try that first since TWO Ocean Blue gives me pretty good results.

    My problem with Orijen:

1.) They claim on their site that "Like all dogs, large breed puppies lack the digestive enzymes (amylase) need to properly metabolize carbohydrate from grains." (direct quote)
-NOT true. Dogs contain pancreatic amylase which is used in the small intestine (where digestion takes place) to digest carbohydrates. The only truth to this statement is that they don't have salivary amylase (like pigs, cows, etc) that is used to help break-down the non-digestible shell of a whole grain (not like the already broken-down grains in pet food).

2.) Their "large breed puppy" formula contains 1.4% calcium, which has been proven to cause orthopedic growth related problems in large breed dogs (PM me if you want copy/paste of study).

3.) They have not conducted any feed trials of their own. While it may not be a great representation of the food, it still shows the company is responsible and will test their food before submitting it to the public.

    4.) RIDICULOUSLY high iodine.

    JMO's on why I don't like it....

I was unable to find that quote on their site but did find it on a retailer's site (by Googling).  I'm not saying its not there, just that I could not find it.  In their downloadable white paper PDF they say something similar but only refer to a lack amylase in mouth.  It does imply what your quote says but does not actually say that.

I'm neither a vet nor a nutritionist but don't you need to know recommended portions before this can be evaluated?  If two foods have the same ratio of calcium but the recommended portion size is different, the amount of calcium per serving is different.

Don't the numerous countries they sell in require feeding trials?  Your wording can be interepreted that though they have not conducted them, a relevant regualtory agency could have.  It could also be interpreted that an independent lab conducted feeding trials.  The state of American media causes me to possibly overanalyze how things are worded.

    4.) RIDICULOUSLY high iodine.

A little more detail would be appreciated because I'm clueless on this.  If you can explain (in laymans terms) the ramifications it would also be appreciated.

Yes, it does say this exactly.  Please refer to the Large Breed puppy page. http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/products/puppyLarge.aspx

Please refer to the amount of calories per cup in the food and you will see it is an issue.

Email them.  They will tell you they haven't done any feeding trials of any sort.

The "safe upper limit" for iodine is around 4mg/kg.  The ideal amount for a dog is 1.5mg/kg.  The amount in Orijen is 7mg/kg.  It's not going to kill your dog, but given over a long period of time it can cause thyroid problems.  Several studies have shown that it is involved in the "initation and promotion of auto-immune thyroid disease."

Oooo, please let me know how it goes!  I know homecooked is best, but I hate cooked, I have no knack for it and I'd probably make the dog sick.  I'd rather spend more on the best kibble I can find.

Where are you getting Orijen from? I have been using the adult formula for over three months and the results are outstanding. My dog loves this food and her energy level, shiny coat, small well formed poops are a tribute to this excellent food. I have been ordering it fronm only4pets in Florida but hope to be able to get it locally soon.

Aren't you the one who uses Nature's Logic?
If so, I've been considering using this food for Ella.

    Why'd you switch?

I'm not Jamcony, but I feed Nature's Logic with great success.  It's the only food Joey doesn't have runny pooh on - loads of probiotics.  And I'm sure you've read my other successes.  Also, my company distributes the food.  I have 3 clients that carry it.  All of them have tried a bag on their own pets with the same success.  They now highly recommend it in their stores.  I switched 2 customers onto Nature's Logic.  One was a boxer with digestive issues and had problems maintaining weight.  They started feeding Royal Canin Boxer, which helped with the digestive upsets and the weight, but the dog had bad ear infection.  I thought that it could be the wheat in the RC Boxer that was causing the ear infections.  I suggested NL.  She tried it.  It worked and the ear infections cleared.  Another case...a westie had pudding pooh.  The lady had him on Eukanuba and was buying Eagle Pack Digestive Enzymes to help with the pooh.  I suggested that she change to NL so she wouldn't have to buy an extra digestive enzyme.  She came back to that store and just raved about the food.  I hear stories like this from my clients that carry the food all the time.  I'm sure it doesn't work for everydog, but I really think it's a miracle food for some.
