Raw Diet for Puppy

    Why thank you...

Phew..Thank goodness you took my comment as it was intended [:)]

I feel like i'm walking around on tenderhooks here lately, and everything is being taken out of context [&o]

    To OP,

I think this sentence sums up what most people here are trying to say:

BUT I wouldn't start raw feeding for the very first time, with a pup.

Probably best to learn about raw feeding on a grown dog where you have a bit more leeway to make mistakes.Because feeding blunders on puppies are often irreversable and can implicate the dog for the rest of it's life.

I think most people who start pups out on raw, have already been feeding this way with their adult dogs,so it's an easy transition and they "already" know exactly what they are doing.

You should also maybe take a look at ian Billinghursts book "grow your pup with bones".It is a puppy raw feeding book.

That is a good suggestion. I'm going to go buy that book, now. I plan on raising my next puppy on raw (I'm actually emailing a breeder who weans to raw), and I'd like to read a puppy-specific book. Thanks, Edie.

I raised Emma mostly on homecooked. There was a period of maybe 4 months (including her time in the shelter) when she ate kibble. She was spayed too early, and grew too tall, but otherwise, hasn't had any nutrition related problems, that I can tell. I was careful about it, though, and used already balanced diets (made for adults, at the tail end of her puppyhood, but she's small and was already 10 months old).

I exchanged it for Innova Puppy and the calcium is 1% compared to 3%.

I am wondering now, what some of the better(healthy) dog treats are. I have some treats by wellness and I am looking at some by canidae. What do you all use?

I mostly use the California Natural Health Bars:

I've never tried the Canidae Snap-Biscuits, but have heard good things about them.

The only commercial treats my crew will touch are the Innova Health Bars.  They are a TINY bit spoiled with homemade liver treats tho.......

I've given up entirely on commercial treats. It's cheaper to just buy meat and cook it and chop it up. And of course dogs love it, and you know what's in it.

an easy option for raw feeders but can get a bit expensive- you can buy whole rabbits, fur, head, and all, ground up, from Hare Today Gone Tomorrow.  The perfect food to start a puppy on.

I haven't given up on commercial treats... but there isn't anything my dogs like better than marrow bones and chicken hearts/gizzards... cheap and nutritious!
