When Missy went to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital for a previously scheduled operation, the vet told Ms. Larabie the dog was severely dehydrated. The dehydration did not go away after the surgery, so Missy went back to the vet.

I think the comment at the end of the article is ironic; if the ingredients in dog food (except for raw) aren't safe for human consumption, dogs shouldn't eat it either.

I remember several months ago I was in Petco and a guy was walking around eating the dog cookies from the pet bar they have.
