    ash question

What is considered a good ash ratio in dry food?  Is an ash content of 7 1/2% good?

I believe, according to what I've been told, anything under 8% is "safe" amount.

I think it's an okay amount, but I try to feed an amount lower than that. EP Holistic ranges from 4-5% in their different formulas and I'm happy with that number.

you can also add water to the kibble. Then you don't have to worry about ash content.

Yes, staying under the 8% ash range is a good idea; the lower the better.  And yes, adding water eliminates the problems associated with high ash foods.  By adding water to the food (or even if you dog is drinking a sufficient amount) it will aid the kidneys in filtering out the excess water soluble ash products.

What exactly is ash in the dry food?  Why is a higher number bad?
    • Gold Top Dog
Ash is the amount of minerals, etc after the food is "burned."  These products are eliminated from the body through urine.  A high ash food (without sufficient fluid intake) can cause build-up in the kidneys (not enough water to help "flush" it through the kidneys).

    Pappillon,

Thanks for explaining it to me.  You explained it so well.  I understand now.

Wait. I thought ash was just the total mineral content of the food. Like, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, etc., all added up. That's not true?

My understanding is the way Papillon explained it, that it's literally "ash". I think the minerals in the ash are in addition to those shown on the guaranteed analysis.

Yes, it is the minerals in the food.  The "ash" part comes from what it looks like when it has been burnt.
