Eagle Pack, nutro, or Canidae

The store manager would be the one to start with.  S/he may want to direct you to someone further up the chain, but that's a good starting point.

I have fed Nutro Natural to my dogs and they did fine on it. I switched to Canidae because it has better ingredients and it was about $5 more than Nutro Natural. I currently feed my 10 year Rottweiler Canidae and he does great on it. He's got a nice shiny coat, no doggy odor and his poops are small and firm.

As far as Nutro reps go, some of them are very misinformed. I had one tell me that Nutro Ultra is the same thing as Innova Evo except that Evo has fruit in it.
    • Gold Top Dog
I had a nutro rep insist that they are the only pet food company that doesn't use by-products.  Oh, ok, really?

i have never tried eagle pack. for some reason no one around here sells it.

we did try canidae als once. it gave amelia diarhea. sydney liked it and didnt have any poopy problems with it, but it is much easier to feed them both the same thing so we didnt buy any more.

amelia was on nutro for dogs with sensitive stomachs for about 8-9 months. she did ok on it. poops were about the same as they are now, but her fur wasnt as soft and shiney as it is now.

currently, both our dogs are on blackwood 3000. and they get fresh veggies and canned food on occassion. right now they have been getting innova canned, but it is almost gone. not sure which canned food we will try next.

There is not alot of corn in EP Original. It is listed once and it is whole ground and doesn't USUALLY cause larger, looser stools. (no offense intended tzu's)

Apparently I was looking at an outdated ingredient list. The one below is from EP's site:

Pork Meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Chicken Meal, Chicken Fat (Preserved With Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Dried Beet Pulp, Anchovy & Sardine Meals, Oatmeal, Brewers Dried Yeast, Flaxseed, Wheat Germ Meal, Dried Egg Product, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Carrots, Peas, Yucca Schidigera Extract, DL-Methionine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Pantothenic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Choline Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Biotin, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Inositol, Kelp, Polysaccharide Complexes Of Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, B. subtilus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus coagulins, Aspergillus oryzae, and Aspergillus niger.

This is the outdated one from Petfooddirect:

Pork Meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Rice Flour, Chicken Meal, Corn Germ Meal (Dry Milled), Chicken Fat (preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Citric Acid and Rosemary Extract), Dried Beet Pulp, Fish Meal, Brewers Dried Yeast, Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin-mineral fortified and the "Custom Supplements-Wellness for Life" Nutrition Program.

Anyway, from my experience, foods with a lot of corn do cause larger stools.

I feed my big one Canidae senior.  The little one gets Canidae ALS.

I have two Pugs on Eagle Holistic duck, great stools, even with my sensitive stomach Pug, has been great for him! All mine have also been on the original, and all had very small stools, nice shiny coats. One is on the holistic senior, small poops. The rest usually get the Holistic chicken. Most do OK, but a couple of my girls have huge poops on EP. Not lose, just huge in size!

Canidae, all had lose stools. They also could not handle Innova. I think something about foods with Turkey causes my dogs to get loose stools, doesn't work for them.

I have also fed them Back to Basics, which also has pork and corn, again, very small stools, shiny coats. This food is very close to EP original formula. Actually, my Pugs have the smallest stools on the EP that has the corn in it, go figure.

Ive been using canidae for a while and have had really good results. Coats are good, energy levels high, and the dogs seem  to be very happy overall. I also like the fact that it keeps the dogs in lean shape.

I havent used eagle pack on my dogs but it looks like a pretty good food.

does anyone have any info about Canidae 'All life stages'

Canidae is also a super premium food and excellent.  I feed it to my dog and love it!  I use that and rotate it with Innova but we are going to feed our large dog just canidae.
    • Gold Top Dog
I rotated between Canidae and EP Original.

I like EP better simply because the dogs just seem to enjoy it more.

However, both diets seem to yield similair results and IMO you really can't go wrong w/ either.  Canidae does seem to be a lot more greasy/oily (gives off a good shine on my hands from handling it) but aside from that very little complaints with these two brands.

I've fed all of these. Here's my take:

Various Nutro formulas over the years - resulting in huge & frequent poops, OK (but not great) coat quality, itchies, and some doggy smell. Easily put weight on my dog that didn't need the extra lbs - and it wasn't good condition.

Eagle Pack Holistic (tried duck, and fish formulas) - slightly large poops, beautiful coats, good smell. Only major problem was the dogs losing condition on it. Less energy than I like, muscle tone declined. I had to feed a LOT to keep them from losing weight.

Canidae ALS (have also used platinum) - normal poops (smallish), beautiful coats, good smell. Keeps condition well - keeps the weight on or off depending on the dog. Good energy, beautiful muscle tone, great endurance.

    Hope this helps.

Pugs2 - my dog couldn't handle innova either. It made her so sick that I thought there was something else going on besides a reaction to food. She loves Canidae Senior though - she barks at me all the way from the kitchen to her food bowl then cleans her bowl in about a minute flat (she's never done this with any other food). My pup and cat both eat canidae as well. Their coats are incredibly soft and silky.

I  have tried Innova several times, a no go each time. I know it is a really great food for so many dogs, but it has to work for our own dogs. Nature's Variety was another disaster for my Pugs, the frozen raw they do great on, but not the kibble.

With al this talk of EP I went to their website to check them out. The EP canned ingredients look good. But the dry food? What's with the corn? [:'(]
