Rat Poison found in tainted food

RAT POISON. I almost fed my beloved Ben, and Patrick's favorite cat, RAT POISON.

That's it. We're going to finish this bag of Bil-Jac and go all homeade. I don't care if I go bankrupt. I'll put the rest of these cull sheep in the freezer in little bags and buy grain direct from a couple organic growers I know.

I know there's other dangers out there, but after years of struggling to balance my dog's needs and safety with my convenience and budget, it's time to make some sacrifices again. I'm able bodied, they are themselves bringing in a reasonably steady income now, and I have a nice kitchen again. One of my best friend raises beef and goats and has offered me culls before. I've got a place for a dedicated freezer if I clean out the shop.

    No more excuses.

That explains why they weren't able to find any mycotoxins, which was about the only thing left after they had eliminated so many other causes. Some mycotoxins can be hard to identify but it's been taking so long I was wondering if they would ever find the cause. Does anyone know if the imported wheat could find its way into our human food supply, in cereal or whatever, or was Menu Foods the only company that bought it?

I have a feeling that the newest premium pet food slogans will be "US Ingredients" or "No Imported Ingredients."

AMEN and I HOPE SO !    In a country where we drive American farmers out of business or give them subsidies so that they can survive, I'd be QUITE happy to drive up demand so that natural economics can drive up prices for wheat, rice, and barley.

Its not to say that contaminations couldn't happen to American crops, but this particular instance would not have happened as this particular chemical isn't used in the US (except as a cancer drug).

Still leaves me wondering, if this form of rat poison is not allowed in the US and it has this kind of outcome (presumably) then what is the result in all the pets/people in china who eat wheat tainted with this? Do they have pets dying too, or even people and don't report it?

Don't we, the US grow enough wheat ?

We probably could, if we weren't paying farmers not  to grow so we can buy whatever we need from somewhere else. [:@]

Considering pet dogs were/are being slaughtered in parts of China due to people freaking out about rabies, it sounds like they already have their hands full with regard to their pets' safety. [:(]

One thing no one has mentioned is that Menu is a CANADIAN based company! I'm sure that their corp. headquarters are the ones making the buying decisions here. All supplies are just shipped to their plants for manufacture.

On my AOL news there is a place to Post Your Thoughts after some of the stories and i checked it out and someone asked why the H- - -  we were playing OUR farmers NOT to grow crops of wheat, and then buying it from OTHER COUNTRIES.    I think our government needs to really look into this and start thinking more home grown. more home produced, etc.

The other day i got a large envelope from a charity..don't remember the exact title, but it was to benefit Native American children.  In that package was a pair of slippers with Indian design embroidry type markings.  I really wasn't paying much attention--just checking out the requests from charities i do give to--Morris Animal Foundation, GRRMF, DAV, etc.  Hubby said something he guessed the Indian children had made the slippers as a way of making money.  When he laid them down, he laid them down upside down and there on the bottom of the bag a tag saying Made in China.  He said something like "This is B---   S---.  They are buying these shoes from China  and sending them to people wanting donations..  Why aren't they making stuff instead of buying it."

Yep, i am getting pretty darn cynical and disgusted with the way things are heading.

If you are into conspiracy theories you could think that China paired with PETA to kill all of our domestic animals too.   (Yes, this actually is floating around on another board)

    One does wonder. [sm=uhoh.gif]

Right now, I'm typing a message to our Care Managers to check their elderly clients' supplies of pet food to make sure they don't have tainted food.  My program will, hopefully, be able to pay to replace food in our area for any elder who truly can't afford it. But, I worry about the ones who don't know, and can't afford vet care if a pet gets sick.  It's a nightmare.

    Continuing on the skeptical line...............

Just b/c they say it was from China......was it really?    Would a Canadian company really import wheat from China and not buy from this continent.  Canada does wheat crops as well.

Can anyone find info on whether China really does import wheat to here?  Another ingredient would make more sense than the wheat thing.  I just don't picutre China with wheat fields.  Maybe I am wrong, but it is certainly worth checking out.

Since this posion is banned on this continent (at least this country), then if any farmers were using this product b/c they had bad problems with rodents, then they could not sell that food as a human grade food, but they could, in theory, get away with it by making less money off their crops and selling it to a pet food manufacturer.

IF this is true, they certainly couldn't admit it.  The farmers couldn't admit it b/c their next crop would be unsuitable for human consumption.  Menu Foods couldn't admit it b/c then they should have been suspicious of this situation.

Only an audit that goes thru their files will show the truth.  Whether we get that truth is up to the integrity of those at the top and whether there will be a cover up or not.  IF the above is true, then I would imagine there would be a hard push for a cover up.

Not saying that it did happen like the above, just speculation.
