Dog foods tainted ...

You are very well versed in homecooking for your dogs and know how to balance everything, but there will definately be a threat of malnurishment with all the "newbies" homecooking and not knowing the correct proportions of ingredients and V/M to add.

Yes... I can see how feeding your dog a well balanced meal would require a degree in rocket science...

I always make my recipe available, and that's a big reason why.  Mine is developed by a canine nutritionalist and I always try to pass on suggestions WITH the ingredients.
I also let everyone that I give the recipe too that it really is NOT a requirement to make a donation to the MS Walk in order to get the recipe, but a request for a consideration.

Actually, I had no intention of bringing up mad cow, but since you have........

Edited to add:  Nope it doesn't take a degree, however you would be amazed at the folks who feed 3 cups of white rice to one cup of chicken, use no calcium sups and absolutely no organ meat.  A dogs diet has to be properly balanced and NOT the same way that a humans does.  Your attitude really is striking me wrong today.

My challenge to comapre recalls was not defined properly...

What I should have mentioned is the difference in quality control of human food in comparison to animal food...

    http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/recaltoce.shtml

People seem to be paying alot more attention to human food... Suprisingly they seem to catch the problems and recall the food BEFORE anyone dies...

Genmar... I am sorry I will tone it back... I can be very intense when I have a hard time making a point... please understand that not too many people have been very nice to me since my arrival...

Your recipes sound like a good idea... I would be suprised that people would not consider meat as the primary source of protein for a carnivore like a dog... That article I posted a page back from here says that they can feed two medium sized dogs for a whole week and it costs about the same a good quality dog food... I can't see why that would not be the ultimate solution in the end...

After looking at the lack of the food recalls for pet food in comparison to human food... I don't think the situation will get any better anytime soon... now whether I follow through and take my own advice and begin preparing my own dog food is another matter all together... and that's what gets me because I know that the majority of people will not cook for their dogs... we are being sold convenience in a can and the quality control is causing deaths...

It is even more frustrating that I cannot find any follow up information for the Go! dog food recall... I will be very upset if I cannot find follow up information for this recall... I have my suspicions that it will eventually fall by the wayside and everything will be ho-hum as it was before... because I feel Corporate North American culture is not accountable like they should be for such an issue. Sure they will recall products, and you will see even more advertisers raise the bar with newer products with ultra high mega uber healthy dog food... wrap it in love and cuteness ( cram it with cheap filler )... But you will see more deaths in the future... The quality control is not there... and I personally think that these companies.... to some degree... are getting away with murder...

I hope the time that i have taken to explain myself has changed the way you feel about my posts today... I realize I'm proabably not making the best impression...

Comparing cooking to rocket science was unnessecarily rude on my part... I was upset because I felt at first reading your comment that it would discourage people from an alternative way to feed thier pets... but there are hundreds of recipes on the web for dog food... so I guess it would not be discouraging...

I think it would be really hard to home cook meals that would be less nutritional than "Save-A-Lot" brand dog food...

And if the forum admin ever gets here and reads this... you should install some rating system so people have an easier time adjusting to the tone of the forum... I know it helps me on other forums... it makes it alot easier to understand where everybody is at...

Some sort of b*tch-o-meter??  and we rate ourselves...well, gee, today I feel like a TEN on the scale....?????

A lot of the recipes available on the internet are NOT all that carefully designed, and even some of the experts give recipes that are REALLY grain heavy...Pitcarin comes to mind immediately.  One of my profs was feeding her little teacup poodle or whatever liver for lunch everyday......educated woman who was majorly against much of the cheap crap available, and knew what to look for in a kibble but then did dumb stuff like OD'ing the poor critter on organ.......

There are an awful lot of folks who do NOT know how to properly feed themselves or their family......so naturally that is likely to carry over to lack of knowledge with feeding a pet.

a rating scale so people can cast votes which help others decide which information should be trusted... that kind of rating system...

The kind of rating system that would allow me to skim through the hundreds of recipes which exist in this forum while being able to tell the really bad ones from the ones that have say... a high rating...

not a rating system for determining bitchyness... although a lot of bad ratings can keep people in line and on the right track sometimes...

When somebody says something... it's not always the number of sheer posts which they have made that can really tell you if the information is any good or not... I have a feeling that you have alot more knowledge about feeding pets a well balanced diet...

now I only wish that you had an opportunity to vote on the quality of some of the recipes which exist here... know what I mean?

I would be curious as to how you would rate this dog food...

It looks decent, albeit a few too many grains, and I don't like tater in addition to the other stuff.  I also know that carrots are something that are high in "something" and I'm not recalling what it is at the moment.  I'd also rather see sweet tater than white tater any day.

Now, honesly, I think newbies would be pretty hard pressed to get any "votes"...and what happens if board member A happens to be royally po'd at board member B when the voting happens and B gets a lousy rating as a result?  I see too many problems with a deal like that.

I think that we are all capable of disputing info and providing valid links.....
