Dog/Cat food recall

    ORIGINAL: DPU

The recommendation came from this thread, page 7  [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=217912&mpage=7&key=DPU]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=217912&mpage=7&key=DPU[/link]  There seem to be no objections other than Glenmar advising about the quality control issues at the factory.  Also I think there was no big debate on this ranking that was also in the thread.  I took the list to the feed store and started with the #1 rank on the list.

The grading system gives a good basic guideline, but it isn't everything. It has several flaws and it doesn't take into account everything that's important. [linkThis>http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=grading_kibble]This article[/link] highlights some of the flaws in it, and I've read that even the original author no longer considers it applicable.

And if you search the archives for Merrick you'll find lots of threads.

ETA: The thing is DPU, there is no *one* good food. Not everyone is ever going to agree. I don't like that Merrick has water inclusive meats instead of meals as their first ingredients - that makes the food grain heavy IMO, but is doesn't bother some people. You may have to try a few different foods, to find something that works for your pack.

Now, it appears dogs and cats died weeks before the recall, according to my local source.

Somehow,,THIS makes things worse...they could have recalled sooner it seems.  PLUS, I HATE that they had to let 7 more die in tests...THAT bothers me too big time. I guess that is what test animals are for...feed them poison that you suspect is hurting pets.  I HATE it!!!

    Ullr,,, this is EXACTLY right!

I think she meant posting in an arrogant, accusatory manner in  someone's first few posts when they don't even know their audience.

I'm not in disagreement on what you are saying especially (although I have no idea about Blue and some of that conversation) but as I said in my other post..when you come out of the box and say "would you feed your kids junk food everyday?" it just not a way to make friends and get people to listen to you. When I read your first post,,I was kind of horrified if you want to know the truth.   The whole tone of your post was unfriendly, and it was directed to someone that is pretty new.  It wasn't neccesary.  Thats my opinion and that is why I said what I did. AS someone mentioned, not everyone agrees that your post was offensive...some others here also post the way you did!

Can someone please cite examples of where I have been rude, arrogant, accusatory and posting in a rediculous manner? I really would like to know what I have said wrong. A good conversation includes ideas and thoughts that not everone may be comfortable with. This only serves to stimulate further thought and debate in a public forum, which is healthy.

But I must beg to differ that I have been any of those things listed above.

Thanks Sooner, there are so many choices and want to do good by my dogs.

Tee Hee, the feed store is probably mad at me because for 2 months I kept cleaning out their stock of dry and canned Merrick.  They kept having to do special orders.  Well on my last purchase they had a nice hefty stock and I filled up minivan with the food.  I did continuously tell them I was having stoole issues and I may have to switch.  I hope they have a good supply of the Canidae and I hope it comes in dry and canned.

That question was one of rhetoric to stimulate thought. It caught your attention and made you think, right? Regardless if you took it the wrong way, there may be others who think along the same line as I do, and they may relate to it better. Have you never answered a question with a question? That is how I think and feel. Engaging in a conversation with other people that all want the same thing for their pets is what I am doing. I am a very friendly person and I feel like many people here have "read" into what I said. Take it for face value. Even the other poster involved whom my reply was directed towards acknowledged I was trying to help. My way is different than your way. Can we agree on that?

How was my post unfriendly, as opposed to Ottoluv's above? Do you not think that was an unfriendly post? I am new, too, afterall.

You know what DPU?  They're in business and probably are USED to folks stockpiling and then changing their minds...at least you didn't take it all back!

ullr...I just read this tread..I saw NOTHING rude.. arrogant... or offensive in anything you have said...

Sure can agree on that. Of course you had to PM the other poster to explain that you were only trying to help....which is how she came to realize that. Perhaps had you said things a little differently, she would have understood that to begin with. THAT is my point!

How was my post unfriendly, as opposed to Ottoluv's above? Do you not think that was an unfriendly post? I am new, too, afterall.
The difference is Ottoluv is trying to explain how she percieved your post...and not answer a question about food.
Look, I'm done with the conversation. I felt your post was rude. I don't think its necessary to say things like "take one less night on the town or one less shopping trip on the Internet to buy your dog good food, it accuses people of not taking care of their dog properly. Whether or not you meant it that way! And it is your opinion and not fact that a dog will live a lot longer if they do what you say. We hope that is true..thats why we are all here feeding our dog what we think is best.
Its not my job to tell people here that they should not post a certain way, I'm sorry I got involved in the conversation to begin with....I do hate rude posts though...I think more people are turned away because of them. This poster almost was turned away until you PMd to explain. Thank goodness you did-too bad you had to!
Enough said on my part, this thread should go back to what it was started for.

Can someone please tell me why the Eagle Pack Holistic puppy is not as good as the others on the list above it? And who is Mordana?
    • Gold Top Dog
Can someone please tell me why the Eagle Pack Holistic puppy is not as good as the others on the list above it? And who is Mordana?

To answer your second question first...Mordana is a regular dog owner that studied dog food and nutrition. She is a very knowing person in this field. She used to post here on Idog for several years ( under the name of Lillian ) and started her own forum...   She does  the comparisons of all the dog foods...and makes it easier to decide which you want to feed because of it.
She does change her opinion and thoughts a lot though...which is a good thing. Learn from mistakes!  I personally don't agree with all that she says though...but does anyone agree with everything?
About Eagle Pack...sometimes when comparing food people feel that there is not enough protein, or certain ingredients. Perhaps that is why Eagle is not on the top of the list. But many dogs such as giant breeds need to not get as much protein...their growth pattern must be slowed down a bit or they are in danger or getting growth problems.    Linda Arndt is is a nutritionist and raised Great Danes for years...says about Eagle Puppy food:
I choose Eagle because all products are made with human grade/organic ingredients,a multi-protein source, not grain based, yogurt cultures (probiotics) digestive enzymes, prebiotics, glucosamine HCL for joint support, high quality sequestered minerals which are critical for proper growth and no bone diseases, no ethoxiquin, no BHA,BHT, only naturally preservative, vitamin C and yucca and balanced Omega 6:3 fatty acids. This is the ONLY dog foods ever tested on giant breeds and it was done on several litters before it became available to the public. It has the longest track record for giant breeds of any food on the market. I directed the feed trials on this food 18 years ago as well as the Large and Giant Puppy food feed trials in 2002 so I know these foods work.

Thanks Dyan. I think I will stick with it. The only negative I saw  was some initial itchiness..I added alaskan salmon oil in small amounts & that has stopped.[;)]

Edited because I think I misunderstood your question. I'm not sure why EP Holistic has a score of 106 A+ when others have 127 A+. I do know that from what I've seen, people have better results with EP than Merrick. Basically, the scoring system is more of a guideline. As long as the food is in the A range it should be fine, then choose from there based on your individual dog's needs.

    Alpo Prime Cuts / Score 81 C

Hey thanks for posting that list. I never realized Alpo wasn't a good brand. I knew it was better than what my parents bought the dogs we had when I was growing up though. I'm definitely going to be looking for better foods from now on. And oh yeah I'm glad I didn't buy Beneful...which I was this close to buying because again I thought it was a good food.
