HELP -Puppy HATES Derma Liquid in his food

I started to add a very small amount of the Derma Liquid Fish Oil in my puppy's kibble to help with his dry skin.  I noticed that it had a very strong fishy smell, and apparantly so did Winston .  He won't eat his food when I put the Derma on it, he will just quietly sit next to his bowl and stare at me with a sad look on his face!!!  He makes me want to grill him a steak!!  Any advice on how to "cover up" the smell or a substitute?  Someone recommended olive oil, but Derma has more nutrients....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

You could try mixing it in with some canned food... or squirting some in his mouth?.....

wow... my dogs and cats go nuts when I put fish oil on their foods. Sometimes that's the only way I can get them to eat their kibble. I stick a pin in the end of a few of the big capsules and squirt the oil out and mix it in. Then they like to lick what's left off my fingers !

No advice, but I feel your pain. I switched brands of salmon oil supplement and NONE of my three will touch anything that new oil has touched. I've tried everything. And I'm not holding down three big dogs daily to squirt something in their mouth that they don't like.

Oh well, back to the old stuff - they loved it.

What are you feeding him, dry food wise?  I feed my dog Authority Harvest baked with lamb and organic olive oil and yogurt.

If olive oil will suffice - he'll eat that - I tried giving him light olive oil, but I am afraid that he may need the extra nutrients in the Derma.  Or does he???  I'm feed Cloudstar's Holistic Kibble - here are the ingredients...but when I posted to ask for advice on whether or not this was a good kibble, the consensus was that it was, but it didn't contain enough fat.....thanks for all your help - I'm so glad I have a place to ask these kinds of questions.  Otherwise my Vet would probably change his phone number.

9% is a bit on the low side to be feeding a growing puppy. I think they need more like 12-14%.  You can try olive oil, or flax seed oil, walnut oil, sunflower oil. Any cold pressed oil that is high in Omega 3's & 6's will suffice. It doesn't have to be fish oil.
My dogs just happen to love the taste of fish oil even though I find it kind of repulsive.
Do you feed your dog any fish at all ?? Salmon, mackerel, tuna or any other fish ? I also make sure they get fish at least 2x week either canned or homecooked.

If he doesn't like the taste of the liquid, would he swallow the gel capsule rolled in something he does like, like peanut butter or cheese?

You can try the "bait and switch" method. Give him something he really likes! Two or three small pieces (with out any enhancements). Then add some w/enhancements. He should be excited about getting more and gobble it down. You may have to add small amounts of the liquid to several "treats" to get it all in him, but its' worth a try! You can use a syringe to inject it into "pockets" of the treat food (hot dogs don't work, lol)

We had a lioness that WOULD NOT take her chicken when it had meds in it. We tried this method, with small pieces first, and then it worked great when we gave her the medicated ones. She always got a "med-free" treat or two after taking all her meds.

Just thought of this! Glenda has a great recipie for liver treats. Maybe you could add a bit into the treat recipie!

Depending on the breed or size of your puppy your way low on fat there.
I do small breeds on more than large breeds but you need to find a way to kick that up a bit more.  I wouldn't force that fish oil on my dog if he didn't like it.  No way.  Find a food with more in it.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I will definately add more fat into Winston's food in other ways.  I wish I could switch foods, but I still have about 10 lbs left that I simply can't afford to throw out.  I will try the treat "switch" idea, Glenda's liver recipe and supplementing his diet with some more fat.....eventually I may switch his food, but for now, I have to do whatever I can to keep him healthy...
OH - and for those who asked, he's about 8lbs, 7 months old on Monday, Havanese breed, and is "supposedly" going to max out at 11/13 lbs.  He looks lean to me now, but not "skinny.

Thanks again and have a great holiday everyone!

Just remember that omega 3 fatty acids are highly unstable and oxidize rapidly. You can add it on top of the treats, but not into the treat recipe, not only can the oil go rancid fairly quickly, but cooking the oil or allowing it to be exposed to air for any length of time will lose the component of the oil that has the most health benefits.
