Ol’ Roy made her sick.

    Ol’ Roy made her sick.

May parents are getting better about feeding their dogs better food but once in a while my dad will still buy cheep Ol#%92 Roy for his dogs.  He left a few bowls for his dogs out and they did not eat the food.  Well, I was visiting yesterday and Giz, who will eat anything, ate two bowls of Ol#%92 Roy.  That is more then double the amount of food I normally feed her in one day.  I didn#%92t notice till she was licking the last bit of the grease at the bottom of the bowls.

This morning Giz tried to wake me up extra early to be let out, being tiered I sort of ignored her until I heard a gagging sound and saw that she was standing by the door.  I quickly let her out and she vomited.  She vomited a few more times and there were huge chunks of bright red Ol#%92 Roy in the vomit.  She seemed to be acting very funny for the rest of the morning and was not her hyper self.  She came inside and went back to sleep which is something she normally doesn#%92t do in the morning.

I offered her some of her regular healthy food and some fresh water she refused to eat it.  I could not blame her she must have been feeling terrible after eating all that bad stuff.  I took out some canned food and mixed it with water, this normally does the trick if I need to get her to eat, and still she ignored it.  She is not a picky eater at all so it really surprised me that she#%92s not interested in anything.  I am really worried about her; I#%92m hoping it is just the Ol#%92 Roy that did this but if she#%92s not feeling better by tomorrow morning I may have to take her to the vet.  I also hope that this incident does not create any type of taste inversions.

Poor Giz!  I hope that once the Ol'Roy gets out of her system she will be feeling better!  Sometimes it's better to not have her eat for a while to allow her tummy a chance to get calm... but I know it's scary when THEY are the ones refusing to eat.

Good thoughts for Gizmo!  Hoping she feels better

    Thanks for the good thoughts.

I do not want to force her to eat but with all the vomiting she did this morning I would at the very least like her to drink some water or something liquidity to re-hydrate her.  She's just sleeping now, I feel so bad for not watching her more closely.

She can go a day without fluids - if her tummy is really upset badly, putting anything down there will just make it worse. Tomorrow, if she won't lap up a bit of broth, or anything, I give you full permission to go into panic mode. [sm=biggrin.gif] Her symptoms sound typical of overindulgence, though - she should be fine tomorrow. Be prepared for the big disgusting poops, too, even though she's barfed up a good bit of it. contact the vet if her stools are very black and tarry and she's still under the weather and refusing food.

Thanks Becca, that makes me feel better about her not wanting to eat or drink today.  Wow, that stuff really is nasty food, I can't imagin what it does to dogs that eat it every day[:'(]

I'll keep an eye on her poop, I'm also worried about her anal glands filling up quickly since she has always had problems with that, I know they will need to be expressed soon so they don't rupture, bad food always makes them worse.

It's more like what would happen if you ate a whole chocolate cake for dinner instead of your usual more balanced fare, rather than her eating, er, poison. Ol' Roy is a really sugary, starchy food. She just needs to rest her system. Good luck and give her a hug from the gang here (gently!).

Old Roy is just about the worst food you can feed your dog. It would probably make any dog that was used to decent food, sick.

Maybe some chamomile tea with broth will make her feel a little better, when she's up to drinking?

Emma had a similar incident, recently, with a large amount of Old Mother Hubbard biscuits. Fortunately, she didn't seem to have too much trouble with it. I fasted her for a day (she wanted to eat, the little pig.... I haven't seen her refuse food unless she was at death's door), and she seemed perfectly normal after that. I hope Giz fares as well!

Eating 2 bowls of Old Roy is like eating a case of twinkies covered with grease.

    I agree with Bob.

Ol Roy stands alone next to most any other food [:'(]

I know i would rather my dogs eat 2 full bowls of a good food, which they would handle sooo much better, than 2 bowls of that garbage!

    Obviously, ya'll don't shop where I shop.

Around here, there is far worse than Ol' Roy. Anything that you can get 25 lbs of for $2.99 (cheaper than chicken feed) canNOT be balanced nutrition. Flies off the shelves, though!

Uggh, that is just sad when there's a food that makes Ol Roy look good. [:o]

What is it, ground road kill mixed with asphalt?

I very much doubt it would contain any meat...

I dont think i even want to see the ingredients,i cant stomach what a lot of people feed their pets of the popular brands.I dare say the ingredients in the 2.99 range of dog foods would give me nightmares [&o]
