looking for a food without..

Oh, I'm so sorry about that long list of offending food.

I listed other options for venison in "terrierlovers" recent thread tht might also be an option for you. But, I only looked for venison - I have not looked to see what the other ingredients are.

I'm using calcium citrate as my calcium source for my homecooked  allergy girl.  I like that form the best b/c it's the most absorbable.  However, some dogs can even be allergic to that form.  Monica Segal has a dog that must use calcium lactate.  So, sometimes you have to experiment with that.

9 quarts of food sounds like a ridiculous amount.  But, I know exactly how you feel.  I experienced a similiar thing when I had to use NO vitamin / minerals for a few weeks with my girl at the very start of her elimination diet.  95% of dogs are supposed to be ok going a few weeks w/o supplements.  They should have stored up a supply.  My girl hadn't.  I think that's b/c she had difficulty asorbing the nutrients in the (high end) kibbles that I fed her.  I now think some dogs just can't get what they need from kibble.   So, during those few weeks her poops were gigantic.  She wasn't absorbing any of her food and lost a lot of weight.  I doubled her food intake - some days I still give her 3 meals a day (we are still on the diet).  I slowly, slowly upped the olive oil and I think that is what helped to put some of the lost weight back on.  But, I did it very slowly with the oil increase.  You should be giving an oil. If you haven't - start small and slowly increase.  I used olive oil b/c it's not in most foods.

Anyhow, the very day after I gave her a multi vit/mineral --- her poops got small again.  She was finally absorbing the food.    She now poops LESS than she did on any kibbles I gave her.  I think she is actually utilizing more food.  The supplement she gets has mostly citrate forms so they are easier to absorb (for most dogs).  It's Thorne Canine BASIC (I use the basic formula).    Would you like me to ship you some so you can try it and see how she reacts?

Of course, I realize if you switch back to kibble, then you won't need the supplement.  But keep it in mind in case you do go back to homecooking again.  I think if she gets the correct multi for her, then she should be able to start eating less food since she will be absorbing more - at least from my experience.  Just pm me if you decide to try this multi.  I sure hope you find something soon that works for you.  I can not imagine cooking 9 quarts of food.  That is 2 and 1/4 GALLONS a day.  I realize it's a dane, but that just is HUGE.      If you can get a multi that works for her, and it reduces the volume of food fed, then that's going to make a big difference for you if you do go back to homecooking.

Sorry, the foods are similar by weight, not per cup.
She does get olive oil, fish oil,and vit E.The fish is bone in and we were able to add ground turkey and turkey necks without a problem. She also can eat sweet potatoes, green beans, peas and carrots.
Actually i cook about 36 quarts of homecooked a day.The other 13 dogs are on homecooked/raw in the AM and kibble at dinner.I had stopped doing it for a couple of weeks when we got busy and i noticed a HUGE difference in the way they looked so i went back. The others are much easier to cooke for as i can use what ever we have left over and what meat is on sale or free from the butcher.
I would love to try the multi vitamin. So far i cant find one that doesnt have extra things it doesnt need like the brewers yeast and stuff to make it palatable.I think thats the problem with them.
We have been at this for 4 months now and she looked great at the beginning when her sores and hot spots healed up.Now she is a mess again! It makes me very hesitant to try new things.

The Eukanuba Response Veterinary diet *might* work. The generic "animal fat" is a concern. But it is more readily available than many other diets.

Ingredients: Potato, Herring Meal (source of fish oil), Catfish, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E, and Citric Acid), Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Fish Digest, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Ethoxyquin (a preservative), Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Rosemary Extract, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Folic Acid, Cobalt Carbonate

Don't the IVD diets have a green pea and (meat source of your choice) line as well? I know they do for cats...

Other than that, have you tried ZD Ultra??

    • Gold Top Dog
ZD ultra is one i have never heard of.I will look it up.
Edited to add : we are trying regular potato tonight to make sure thats ok.

What about all meat canned food?  Maybe you could add some Cus Cus or sweet potato to it.

    A thought.....

Someone on a raw feeding list I'm on suggested going to freecycle for meat. She posted "Wanted: Frozen Meat" and said that she makes her own dog food. It's for dogs, so freezer burned or a little too old is ok. She ended up getting around 100 pounds of meat, from that. Cuts back on costs, a bit[;)]

You've got a lot of dogs, so maybe that'll help some.

Actually i think i saw someone do that. They didnt say it was for dogs but what else would they want freezer burned meat for?
Wal mart had turkey necks and wings for 25 cents a pound.i bought 2 carts full. The checkout lady looked at me like i was nuts!

This one looks very simple (I think you said she's OK with sweet potato). It may be more affordable than the veterinary formulas.

Well i made a very brave move and bought some Timberwolf Ocean blue. I watched her very carefully! After a couple of weeks so far its working great! She only gets about 3 cups a day for one meal and then a grain free homemade meal in the eve but she has finally gained some weight back and her sores are healing nicely! Her hair is growing back! So glad i finally found something! Thanks everyone!

hey thats great news - my dane mix with significant allergies  (chicken, eggs, and turkey - not going to bother trying duck) finally put some coverage on his ribs with TWO.  We use the OB and the Bison.  Although others have reported otherwise I believe that the 550/cp is right - he gets just about 4cps a day, plus8-12oz of meat or fish and is doing really well.
So I hope that it continues to go well for Emma!
