Innova and coprophagy?

    Innova and coprophagy?

I have a one-year old Lab who, we think we've narrowed it down to after starting her on Innova Large Breed Adult about a month or two ago, started eating her own poop.

I'm just wondering whether anyone else has noticed this happening after switching to Innova?

As well, she has digestive problems (the vet says it's possibly allergies) with low-quality (Iams and Pedigree, which is what she was eating when she came to us), low-fibre dog foods.  The only two foods she's had firm stool with is the Innova and the vet's Med-ical High Fibre (at $80+ CDN per bag!).

Can anyone recommend another high-quality brand which is high in fibre?

We're getting desperate because, if we can't fix her stool problem, our next step is to do an elimination diet to assess her allergy.  But, she's a Lab and LOVES her treats and rawhides....and, it'd break my heart if we had to remove everything from her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, it sounds like she's doing great on the food (she looks really good! that hurt-your-eyes-shiny coat is gorgeous!). I have one that just... .likes to eat poop. She eats hers and the other dogs'. She eats rabbit poop, horse poop, bird poop, fish poop, frog poop, anything she can get her poopy little mouth on. She's on a great diet (mostly raw with some homecooked and the rare super premium kibble meal) and has no known physical problems. I honestly think that she just LIKES poop. I try to keep it picked up. Otherwise, I get poopy breath kisses.

I'm not sure on the numbers for fibre ... but since you're in Canada - you may want to look at the ;Performatrin Ultra.  I didn't have any luck with it, but it may work and it's cheaper than a lot of other options up here in the North. [:D]

You'd have to find a "Pet Valu" somehwere near you.  It's their house brand.

My foster Basset also started eating his poops after introducing Innova. Before that he was fed Iams by the people that had him and they did not notice him doing this.
I assumed the Innova just made them smell good enought to eat! [:o]

He is now on Solid Gold Wolf-King and does not indulge as much but I do not know the fiber content.  I also started walking with him outside again on potty trips and re-directing him after a poop (calling him away a couple of feet and rewarding with a treat - close enough I could stop him if he didn't come to me). Usually he lost interest in the deposit and I could pick it up with out a fight!

Hope this helps and you find something that works.

Ha! Thats what I was thinking too. I think Prince has always indulged since we adopted him but I have really noticed him taking a fancy to his own 'treats' after switching in Innova.

But he does like to eat rabbit poop & cat poop so who knows [:'(]

Jennie - thanks...she IS a gorgeous girl.  I have a feeling that, in the long run, we'll be back on the Innova because she has done so well on it.  And, she loves it.  Although, she also eats her poop...so, not sure what that says about the taste!  LOL!  [:'(]

Stef - I'll definitely check out the Performatrin Ultra.  Thanks!  Although, mind if I ask why you had no luck with it?

Robin - mind if I ask why you switched from Innova to the Solid Gold Wolf-King?  I'll definitely check out it's fibre content...thanks!

Not at all....  for the most part is was logistics and cost.  I really wanted to feed the Innova Evo and my dog and the two fosters loved it but Bandit is only 14 months and EVO recommends waiting till 2 yo.  So I backed down to Innova but I have to drive 45 minutes across town to get it (i know - not that far for other folks but big drive for me when all my activities/work are in a 10-15 minutes radius from my house!)  When PetCo started carrying SG I thought I would try it (plus every 10th bag is free[:D]).  The three dogs have done exceedingly well on it and the Basset no longer has the gas he did so I am very happy with it.  I  will still use Innova when I rotate every couple of months.

Based on how beautiful and shiny she is I would vote to keep her on the Innova and just re-direct on eliminating.

My lab did really well on the Performatrin products ... when we adopted my dobe it didn't work for him at all. (Dry flaky skin, lots of dandruff, etc.) We tried every kind of Performatrin they carried ... Natural, Holistic, Maintenance, Super Premium.  I just though of it - just because I know how expensive foods are in Canada.  (I drive to get mine in the US.)

We've tried a variety of food for him and he's on Canidae right now ... but my lab isn't tolerating the Canidae ... so we're back to 2 different foods. [8|]

Since your dog seems to be doing so well on Innova, why not just get a product that is supposed to keep dogs from eating their poo?  You can find these ;products at any petstore.  I believe you put the stuff on the food before the dog eats.  It's supposed to make the poo taste worse![:D]   Here's one product:

I definitely appreciate the suggestion...but, unfortunately, I have tried Forbid (prescription from our vet) and adding pumpkin...each of which were highly recommended and neither worked.   I've read on this forum that Deter and other pet store gimmicks don't work.  Therefore, I am currently trying meat tenderizer.  I should know within a few days whether or not this works.

Actually, the pet store clerk suggested last night to add natural flaxseed oil to the Innova.  She thought that perhaps Reese was lacking something...and the flaxseed oil may help.

Has anyone ever heard about adding this?  Any ideas what it would do?

I've been told to try meat tenderizer but I've never done it. It has stuff in it (like onion powder) that I don't want my dogs eating.

I really don't understand why it bothers people so much when dogs eat poop. Dogs eat poop. They love poop. It's only a problem in your head. Particularly if they are eating their own poop-- no danger of ingesting worms they don't already have. Anyway, pick up your dog's poop promptly and he won't eat it. Much healthier than adding chemicals to his diet, or switching him to a less healthy diet. I've always wondered if  ;puppies like to eat dog poop more than older dogs (who usually prefer the poop of other species) because they are trying to build up a good collection of gut bacteria. How about feeding him a probiotic? and you should be supplementing any processed dog food diet with a source of omega-3's as your store clerk suggested. Flax seed is ok, but a cold-pressed fish body oil is better.

As much as poop eating grosses me out, yeah, mudpuppy is right.  We didn't have a problem with our guys until the latest foster litter, and oye!!  Now most everyone thinks thats the best treat going.  So I pick up and FAST.

Mudpuppy and Glenda - I definitely agree.  As gross as the eating poop is, she seems much healthier on the Innova.  It's more my husband that gets squeamish and reprimands her afterwards.

As well, we tend to get concerned when, at times, she does manage to eat some...and then she throws it up.  Also, she has taught this habit to our 3.5 month old pup...who will also eat her own and, in turn, throw it up.

Otherwise, more often than note, we generally pick it up before she gets to it...the biggest problem we have is when she goes out around 3 a.m. every morning (not sure if this is habit...or, just how long she takes to digest dinner)...standing in my pjs with a flashlight in the backyard waiting for her to do her business is a bit of a pain.  Although, I'm sure, comical to our neighbours!

Just to clarify...(as I'm fairly new to altering her food)...what would you suggest is a good "cold-pressed fish body oil"?  I know that the Innova she's eating contains Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils...?
    • Gold Top Dog
oh, it may say on the bag that it contains omega-3, but omega-3 is unstable to heat, light, and oxygen. By the time your dog eats it the omega-3 levels have dropped dramatically, possibly to zero. I buy Grizzly Salmon oil brand, mostly because my local pet store sells it, and keeps in-stock bottles in the fridge. You can probably find a usable product in your local pharmacy. Keep whatever you buy in the dark, in the fridge. If you can see the product through the packaging, don't buy it.
