    Vegan Dog Foods-- Your opinion

I just came across a website that sells vegan pet foods- what is your opinion on feeding your dog a vegan diet?

    Edit: Heres the linkhttp://www.veggiepets.com/

I had a friend. choose to feed his dog his an all veggie diet. 7 dogs were fed. In 6 months the dogs teeth to start to fall out. They all had gastric distress....all the time. Ear infection galore. And now one is diabetic. I do not think that is healthy. Dogs are need it can be argued dogs are carniovores or omnivores. But they are not herboviores.

I think feeding a vego diet to an IMO carnivore is un-natural,unhealthy,cruel and completely unfair!Dogs love and thrive on raw meaty bones, and a meat based diet.I can say without a shadow of doubt that my dogs would die if i put them on a vegetarian diet, because they just wouldnt eat anything without meat in it,and they would starve to death.
There is far too much in preparing a balanced veg diet for a dog, which makes me even more adamant that this is not a diet meant for canines.

It makes me absolutely irrate when i hear of vegetarian cat owners enforcing their views on their little carnivor's,nearly as seething as when i hear dog owners making their dogs in vegetarians [:@]

Mine love fruits and veggies----and also meat and fish.  I suppose if for some reason your dog couldn't handle any type of  meat, fish, poultry, etc, you would not have a choice.  Otherwise, no i would never do that.

Let's make the distinction between vegetarian - no meat, but cheese and maybe eggs , and vegan - no animal products whatsoever.

IMO on the rare occaision you might have a dog that can't eat meat vegetarian with eggs and cheese would still be a decent way. I don't know how good such a diet would be for skin, coat, teath, muscles, etc, but it won't kill the dog.

A vegan diet for a dog is stupid.  But like PT Barnum said, a sucker is born every minute and those pet food manufacturers know their market. Frankly if I could not feed an animal it's natural requirements I would not get that animal.

I completely agree with you, Edie.

It's cruel and unfair to impose such things on our pets, IMHO. Vegetarianism/veganism is a personal choice. I don't think a dog would ever choose not to eat meat.

I'm vegetarian. I feed my dogs raw meat. They're carnivores! To think otherwise is foolish.

If it's necessary for health reasons, that's another story. My uncle had a dog that needed to be put on a vegetarian diet. He had great difficulty digesting meat. He was really sick and on his way out anyways though.[:(]

My  sister is a vegetarian (but thank god not vegan) and truly supports raw feeding. When I'm not home or at school, she is in charge of feedings, and feeds the dog her preference base with  tons of meat. The preference is the only veggies my dog get. I feed her enough for a 10 pound dog, even though she's about 30.

I think this is more acceptable, IMO with vegetarians than vegans. You'll have some of those hardcore vegans from PETA who feed stict vegan diets who are constantly sending their dogs to the vet and are wondering why the dog is dying.

Dogs cannot thrive on vegetrain diets, even if they are supposedly allergic to all protein sources. For some odd reason, they thrive on raw, and they aren't "allergic" to that protein source. It has something with how they process the food.

People who insist their pets eat vegeterian/vegan simply b/c of what they think is right... make me see red.

I thought the very same thing, what BEAUTIFUL dogs,  LOVE those blue eyes on that one in the front.

Thank-you for the comments on my dogs, everyone.

I feel though that I should admit that I enhanced the blue in her eyes in that montage. They're a light icy blue, and they wouldn't have looked as striking as they usually do against the snowy background. Here's a photo of her, [linkhttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/baileymoffatt/Dogs/HPIM3446.jpg]au natural.[/link] Still beautiful, I think!

I think I'll go make a new sig. I feel guilty now.

So, they can't do well on these veggie dog diets?  I know Natural Balance has one.  I think the protein in it comes from soy?  I've never tried a diet like this but if it says it meets the dietary needs, still no good??

I am a vegetarian, but I don't  feed vegetarian food, if my dogs couldn't eat anything else, well then I would.

What is worse, a cheap low quality dogfood or a high quality vegetarian option?

LOL! I just stared at that picture for 3 minutes trying to figure out if her eyes could really be THAT blue. Then I scroll down, and the question's answered!

And now you don't have that siggy picture anymore, so people are going to think I'm nuts! [:D]

Why not high-quality meat-based dog food? It's not like people who feed Ol' Roy would be deciding between the two.
