Canidae is fine to feed him, aren't you so wonderful to give him a home for awhile[] He's a lucky boy!!!

Goldens, as large breeds, should get a food with a calcium level of less than 1.2% and fat less than 12%. Before the age of 6 months, all puppies absorb calcium indiscriminately, so the best way to prevent bone disease in large breed dogs is to keep the calcium levels at the minimum necessary, and to slow their growth with a low fat diet, but still maintain regular puppy levels (usually 25%) of protein to support proper growth.

Above all, KEEP HIM LEAN! Weight plays as much of a role in development of bone disease as diet and genetics, and its also the easiest to control.

Ok, Thanks for the replies.
He was eating very cheap dry puppy food ( alot of it too). He is over weight now in my opinion.
I am taking him to the vets tomarrow. He sways when he walks. Might be the fat, might be his hips. He is a very lazy guy. If I stop and he is on leash he lays down. Ofcourse I have herding breeds so maybe this is typical retreiver. I will be feeding him canidea ALS for now. Once he settles in I will add some other things.  Should I feed him for the weight he should be or the weight he is? I was thinking like 1 cup 3 times aday. Too much? My corgi pup same age gets almost two cups aday if it is just dry and he's 20lbs.
Gilbert yeah we named him that, is about 45lbs. at 18 weeks.

It's definitely NOT. Golden puppies should be crazy wild. I hope that your little guy is just overweight, and not sick. BTW, do we get pictures???

I took Gilbert to my vets friday, he is 45.3 lbs. at 19weeks old. She also think he is growing too fast. I was told he needs to loose weight or atleast not put any more on for now. I did decide to go with the canidae dry for now.  I am giving him 1 cup of food  3 times a day. I'd like to give him some healthy "real" food too like eggs,cottage cheese,meat, raw bones.  But I am not sure what would be low in fat. He is getting more exercise just playing with the other dogs but I am in Michigan and it's freezing out side (not burr it is cold but freezing). So I can' take him for any kind of walks other then a quicky. He is too young to walk the tread mill. He runs for a short while often in the yard with the other dogs but only like 5 minutes. I am giving him baby carrots to chew and low fat blue dog bakery cookies broken up. I put his noon meal in a Kong. I have always had skinny pups and rescue adult dogs, that needed to put weight on so am a little confused on what to give him for snacks and such since he needs to lose or maintain his weight.
