Switching from EP holistic to Innova. Should I anticipate any unusual problems if I do it gradually?
And can a dog suddenly become allergic to a food they are used to?

And can a dog suddenly become allergic to a food they are used to?

I can't feed Innova because Jessie's allergic to chicken, but the most common complaint about Innova seems to be soft stools. If you switch gradually there shouldn't be any digestive problems, especially if your dog doesn't have a sensitive stomach. Yes, a dog can suddenly become allergic to an ingredient (usually the meat or grain) in a dog food they've been eating for years. It usually takes a while for a dog to develop an allergy to a food; three months or more.

My sister's dog had soft stools on Innova. I still suspect he was being overfed, and that was the cause, but she of course won't try Innova again to be sure...

Cherokee had firm poops on it. I switched her for other reasons. She's got a pretty solid stomach though, so she may not be the best guide...

My other sister's dog is doing quite well on Innova right now. Nice, firm poop. And he doesn't have a very solid stomach. He's fed a rather small amount (2 cups) for a dog his size (75 pounds), because he's overweight, and gets no exercise. So I'm still inclined to believe most of the problems with Innova have more to do with overfeeding than anything else.

ETA: This suddenly seems argumentative. That wasn't my intention. I'm just sharing my opinions and experience. [:)]

Crusher has a tissue paper tummy and he did really good on Innova.  Unfortunately I have no way of getting it anymore.  I think its a common problem, over feeding Innova.  You do feed less of it and at first your dog may want more than it needs.  But if you switch gradually it should have time to adjust.

My dog also had loose stool on Innova and I didn't overfeed him. I really like the ingredients, but it seems like loose stool is a really common issue with that food.

This is too wierd, I've heard the opposite, this little (actually kinda big) chihuahua group I'm part of LA it seems poop is a big topic :) It seem the general consensus that Innova causes constipation and thick anal secretions, so you have to watch for full anal glands and add pumpkin. Ha ha, I guess it just goes to show you can't listen to others, only your babies behind! Otto still hasn't had any problems, but he's only been on it two months :)
