Orijen Pet food? Anyone feed it?

So...I am thinking about putting Ella back on dog food. I mean, not ALL the time. But for the majority of her diet.
But I am going to be SOOOO picky about what kibble I feed her.
While I do like Timberwolf Organics, I'm little less than pleased with her stools on it.

This food, to me, looks like a PERFECT kibble. I would put Ella on this in a HEARTBEAT. I LOVE the fact that they claim low ash chicken meal.

The only not so perfect thing about it is the fact that the protein is 40%.

Does anyone feed it, and if so, do you know if it's available in the U.S.?

It looks like a great food.  I'm personally not fond of white potato in kibble, but if your dog is tolerant, go for it.  It is available in the US, but so far only in Florida:

Also---have you checked out Ziwi Peak?  I'm a raw feeder (my dog can't tolerate kibble), but he can eat this product--it's air dried--looks like soft jerky bits--he loves the fish/venison.  [linkhttp://www.ziwipeak.com/]http://www.ziwipeak.com/[/link]     The only drawback is that it is expensive, but their canned formulas are great too.  Your profile reads that you are near Chicago---are you anywhere near Wheaton, IL?  There is a pet store there that sells it, I usually order from their online website:  [linkhttp://www.naturalpetmarket.com/]http://www.naturalpetmarket.com/[/link]

Just trying to find you some other options.  Hope this helps.

well, I emailed them yesterday and asked if it was available in the states, but they have not replied yet. I'm sure they will eventually but I need to go to the store and get Ella some non-wheat training treats today and if I cannot get this food here or if it'll be too expensive to ship, I'll go ahead and get her something from the doggy healthfood store when I get her treats.

Which ones did you try?  I've only bought the Ocean Blue (still on first bag).  I tried samples of Dakota Bison but it did not give me firm poop (on a cold turkey switch) with a couple of meals worth of samples.

OB gives my dog consistenly firm, low odor poop and it fades to white and crumbles in days.  That tells me it well digested.

ocean blue and wild & Natural.
    Both give her soft stools.
not runny, just LARGE and lots of poop. And GAS. But I can give her yogurt and that usually takes care of the gas part.

    Chewbecca--

Have you tried Solid Gold Barking at the Moon?  It may be worth a shot.  I also edited my previous post to add info. about Ziwi Peak, don't know if you caught it.

The only not so perfect thing about it is the fact that the protein is 40%

I'm not trying to start a protein debate, but I'm wondering how 40% can be too much, when you're now feeding raw. Surely her raw diet is more than 40% protein? Don't you just feed meat and bone? So that means her diet is all fat, protein, and ash, and two things you have an issue with are high protein and ash? I'm confused. Obviously the raw has a lot of moisture, so maybe that's what you have an issue with, but in that case, just add water. I always add water to Cherokee's food, whether it's kibble, homecooked, or raw. I mean, the alternative to protein in kibble is carbohydrates. You'd rather have high carbs than high protein?

Huh? I thought I edited that part out because I forgot that when I DO feed kibble, I add water, so high protein in kibble doesn't bother me that much. Oops.

    I haven't fed kibble in a while.

Take a look at different varieties from Nature's Logic. The ingredients are all natural, all nutrients from real food sources... no synthetics. I have been feeding my 20 month old their kibble and canned foods for about 4 months with great results.

I just went and picked up 3 bags of treats for Ella.
I got her some lamb treats by New Zealand Real Meat, some goat lung by DogIt's, and some dried beef liver treats put out by a local Holistic Vet's mother.

And I don't know what I was thinking when I thought about putting Ella back on kibble now.
    Whoosh!
I'm keeping her on raw and when the infection heals, I'll start an elimination diet. Even though I'm pretty sure it's the wheat from the liver wheat treats I made for her.

And I think I'm going to start taking her to the local holistic vet here in town. I'll skip the $200 "intro to raw feeding/grain-free/supplement with this" consultation and just start taking her in for skin issues. I'm NOT going to keep putting my dog on different antibiotics whenever she has a skin breakout. I want answers and I don't want to keep having to mask an underlying problem.

I'm glad that you're going to try the holistic vet. I think you'll be happier with that than with kibble[;)]

    Oh, yes.
I'll be taking Ella to [linkhttp://www.drkarenbecker.com/nav_sets_04/set01.htm]Dr. Karen Becker.[/link]
