Can you feed Large Breed Formula to a small breed?

As I mentioned in another post, I am trying to find a quality food to switch my MIL dogs' over to.  One 9yr old female black lab - overweight and has trouble walking up steps and cannot jump even when she gets excited and tries [:o].  The other dog is an 8 yr old male Shih Tzu Mix - also overweight, but not as much as the lab.

The guy that works where I shop for my pets seems to be pretty knowledgable about dog food ingredients and dog nutrition. He gave me free sample packs of Innova Senior for Large Breeds to try.  He also gave me some regular Innova Senior; however, the Large Breed formula has the Glucosomine added in, which the lab probably needs.  I'm trying to avoid 2 different foods for the dogs, as I know my inlaws will not keep up with it.  He says I can feed the large breed formula to both of them and it won't hurt anything.  Is this true?

How much glucosamine is in  the LB formula? It might not be enough to make a difference. I don't see why you couldn't feed the little dog the LB food. It's probably just lower calorie, with joint supplements.

I would be concerned about the size of the kibble pieces.

Their site lists the ingredients and says there are 330 cal/cup, but it doesn't say how much of each ingredient is in it.  The package I have is only a sample pac, so it doesn't have much info either.

So, what complications could too much glucosamine cause for a dog?

The problem is that these foods that contain glucosamine don't usually contain enough to help the dog. It's better to add a specific joint supplement instead. I start supplementing all of my dogs from age six months on, just in case it helps.
I'd suggest you try Reduced Fat Evo for overweight dogs instead of Innova Senior. The kibble is tiny enough for the little dog, and the high protein is excellent for maintaining and building muscle mass, something older dogs sorely need. The low carb/high protein/moderate fat formula should help strip body fat without losing muscle mass.

I guess I have some reading to do on supplements; I'm so clueless about them [:o].

Are they only important for large breeds, or do my Shih Tzus need supplements too?  I think I saw on another post that glucosamine is given 500 mg per 50 lbs? Are there different joint supplements to choose from?  I saw a post comparing Cosequin with Glucosamine Chondroitin - just different brands of joint supplements?

Is there a website or link that I could do some research on?  Should I be concerned with overdosing on supplements if it's already in their food?[8|]

I switched 2 of my Tzus (15 mos old) from Evo Low Fat over to NB Duck/Potato (due to possible allergies from the EVO).  The Duck/Potato has fewer ingredients - is it possible that I should be giving them some type of supplement since they may not be getting as many nutrients as they did in the EVO?

If I put the lab on a joint supplement, I could easily put both her and the other Tzu on the Evo Reduced Fat; I still have a half bag left over from my 2 Tzus switch over.  I just don't feel comfortable with the supplements yet [:o

I also foster an 80 lb Shepherd Mix - He's approximately 17 months old.  I've fed him EVO for the 6 months he's been in my care, and he's a picture of health!  Should he be on a joint supplement too?

I've never heard of any problems from over-dosing with joint supplements, other than the occasional dog that gets stomach upset from MSM.
I would supplement NB duck n potato with extra protein. It is quite low in protein. If you have allergies, you might want to be careful what you add!  canned 95% duck evo or other canned duck food might be a good choice.
