Info on Raw Diets

Can anyone direct me to some good websites and/or books that would give me accurate information on feeding a raw diet?  I would like to do it correctly.  Also, are there any companies out there that sell a pre-made raw diet?  Thanks!

and Aunt Jeni's; [linkhttp://auntjeni.com/]http://auntjeni.com/[/link]  are some of them.

There are some differences between these diets; for example, Nature's Variety raw is 95% meat but Steve's Real Food is 60% meat.

I'm feeding Volhard which is from the "Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog".  It's not entirely raw - they get a cooked grain meal - and it has an extensive list of supplements so it's pretty involved - but my guys are doing great on it.  (I'm having trouble with the liver ... but they're not... *laughing*)

" There have been a small number of cases where dogs have had impactions caused by the glob of pre-made and ground food hitting their stomachs, before their digestive system has had time to produce the necessary chemicals to process the food. "
This really doesn't make sense; where's the links to show this has happened?

" The food contains unnecessary supplements"

Raw Diets Don#%92t Need to Have Supplements Added
True, some don't -but most do. Whole prey meets the 1985 NRC guidelines (we now have 2006 guidelines) and it may seem logical that feeding whole prey will indeed meet the needs of a dog. But reality is quite different. Firstly, we don#%92t have access to fresh prey. Instead, most of us by food at grocery stores, butchers or food co-ops. The nutrient value of these farm animals is not the same as in the wild. But even if it was, not many people can feed an entire elk, goat or what have you. Further, while that whole animal may meet requirements, most dogs don#%92t consume it in its entirety.
So, do all raw diets meet a dog#%92s requirements? No, not even today#%92s version of ‘whole prey#%92 diets can assure us of that. Once you know what a diet provides, the importance of supplements or a better diet becomes clear.

Jane Anderson...
Isn't she like that fanatical raw feeder that is kind of crazy and doesn't really have any credentials to back up her statements?
Or am I thinking of someone else?

Not that someone needs a degree or certificate to know that something works or has worked for their dogs, but isn't this the person who throws around her information like it's facts?

And I feed raw. I probably won't be for long, though.

Hers was one of the site I looked at.  There is some good info but for the most part I didn't care for her because I think she takes too relaxed an approach to raw feeding.  Not that there isn't more than one way to feed but I wouldn't just give whatever all the time.  I would have a routine.  My dog's health is too important to just feed whatever.

I say to each his own on how they go about feeding raw or what they feed. I figure if their dog is doing greats 6 months after the fact, FABULOUS.

But I'm beginning to question if a homemade raw diet is ok for my dog.

My friend is a rescue rep and highly reccomends this book to new owners looking to feed raw.

[linkhttp://www.switchingtoraw.com/]http://www.switchingtoraw.com/[/link]

I think that it's only available through that link not sure.
It's apparently very comprehensive for newbies with raw. I've never read it but have also heard other new raw feeders reccomend it.

I had a nice, long and lengthy reply to all of this when it timed out.....what a shame[:(]

But, I'm fed up with Joy and I'm trying stay in a good mood, and debating about raw isn't top on my list....

Bottom line:

To each his own. I agree very much with that.VitaWright asked about raw feeding, so Im giving it to her. I personally would never feed my dog premade, for certain health aspects. There are pros and cons to both, but I'd rather take the cons to prey-model, with the whole caracasses for health reasons.

Becca, wasn't it you that posted that Ella was getting the lick granulomas? Just curious...

Yes, Ella has a lick granuloma AND is fed raw.
I'm not taking her off raw. I will keep doing a homemade raw diet for her because, to me, it'll be easier to do an elimination diet with raw.
And, honestly, I don't believe I'm going to have to do an elimination diet because I really think it was the wheat in the liver treats that I made for her.
