apples?

I cut an apple this morning and was left with a good amount of apple "meat" around the core and was going to throw it away, but instead gave it to Buddy to eat. He played with it a bit, but within 5 min. it was gone ate the whole thing. Now, if I wasn't completely sure that it was okay, I wouldn't have given it to him, but should he have had the seeds? I know the meat was okay, but afterwards thought that maybe he shouldn't have had the seeds.

I don't mean to scare you but they state apple seeds contain arsnic(sp) in them. I don't think this one time would affect anything, but ask your vet's office what they think about it to be on the safe side.

I wish they would say exactly HOW poisonous apple seeds are. How much does it take? 5 seeds? 5 ounces? 5 pounds? I give my dogs apple cores all the time. Plus they like to "clean up" after the kids if they find one around the house. My sister's Golden Retriever will gorge on them every summer when they fall off the apple tree. I'd bet Sydney eats at least half a dozen apples a day and has never had a problem.

Anyone know how many apples seeds is too many?

APPLE SEEDS:
Apple seeds are in the same category as other fruits like apples, cherries, peaches and apricots. The stems, leaves and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, and depending on the dose, you will see not only the common gastrointestinal effects but weakness in coordination and difficulty breathing. In some extreme cases, animals can go into shock or coma and can even result in death. The toxic ingredients are contained in the center of the seeds, so be sure keep your pet from chewing or crushing the seeds with their teeth. Another interesting thing to point out is that the level of toxicity can depend on growing conditions. If it's a stressful growing environment for an apple tree, the level of toxicity may be less than if the tree was growing in a healthy environment. This makes it difficult to gauge how much is a dangerous level.

After reading your post, I gave my vet a call. He told me to not worry about it. He had seen a golden eat them all the time and not have a problem with them. So, I could do whatever I wanted to: give them or not. I probably won't...don't want to take a chance, but I was relieved to know that I didn't have to send someone to my house to make sure the dog was okay.

Yeah, and I think it would have to be a pretty big amount to kill a dog too.

My parents actually knew some lady that liked apple seeds so much that every time she ate an apple, she'd save the seeds in a cup. One day the cup was full, she ate all the seeds and died. [

WOW, how sad to die like that. I have never heard of anyone liking apple seeds. Tragic for that lady.

I like apple seeds also. I will eat the whole thing, core and all, and never have given a thought about it either.

Everytime we eat an apple, we give Odie the core. He loves it. Hasn't died yet either. [

We have an apple tree in our backyard. Chase eats apples from the grass all the time in the summer.

Now that it's winter, we give him a whole apple every day. He loves it, and it gives him nice fresh apple breath.

Honestly, I'm not going to worry about apple seeds. I don't think he even chews them, so they probably come out whole, buried in his poop.
