    mixing kibble and raw

Hi everybody. Lately I've been doing research about healthier ways to feed my dogs.  This forum has made me so much more aware of whats really in animal foods.  I'm constantly checking labels now for my dogs and cat lol.  Anyway, I feed then purina ;pro plan and they've been good on it (maintainng healthy weight, shiny coats, good stools, etc) but I feel like I should add some things to their food.  I give them a raw egg mixed with the kibble every other day. I recently read you can give them raw bones, which I never knew, it's only the cooked ones that can splinter.  So i would like to add a chicken thigh or something like that to their food a couple times a week. Should I give less kibble when mixing in raw or the same amount?  I mean, I don't imagine a chicken thigh would really make a huge difference in quantity but just curious.  I'm fanatic about not letting my dogs get fat, lol, and my male tends to get a little chubby over winter - without a good run every day. Thanks for any advice

I mix bones and kibble but not literally. I don't really do it because I think feeding them together would be unhealthy - it's just I feed two meals and doing the bones seperate is easier. [:D]

You can look on the USDS website for nutritional data on how many calories are in a thigh. It actually can make a big difference so watch your dog's weight to see how much kibble to take out.

Well, IMO, Purina isn't great quality. BUT, if it works your them, then that's great :)

Have you considered just feeding raw by itself?
It's cheaper, and the healthiest from what I hear.

But mixing a bit of raw with regular dog food is a great idea.

What's the prupose for this? Is there any particular reason you want to do this?
    Coat/skin health? Weight? Viatmin supp?

If you haven't seen your dog on purina pro plan, don't bash it... the ingredients list might clash with some (haven't looked lately) but its an excellent food in my opinion. I recommend it to a lot of people with active dogs especially.

I apologize - I meant to say USDA not USDS, whatever that might be [8|] Website here:http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

I used Pro Plan for my livestock guardian dogs for a long time before I switched them to EVO. Then I switched back to Nutro High Energy because they were going through the fence and helping themselves to the neighbor's calf creep feed, arrrrrrrggggh. When we figure out how to block that fenceline, we'll go back to the EVO. I think they are just used to filling their bellies when they are empty, so two servings a day of the grainy stuff keeps them out of the calf feed. [:o]

I really wasn't bashing it. Sorry if it came off that way.

I mix raw with kibble for all but one of my dogs. Half of their diet is raw/other fresh foods, and the other half is kibble or canned Blue Buffalo. Ogre, my Akita,  is 85 pounds, and very active. He gets 1 1/2 cups kibble over the course of two meals, and then 2 1/2 - 3 pounds of raw at night. As long as he gets enough exercise, he stays at a healthy weight on that amount of food.

Initially, I was giving him 1 1/2 cups kibble, and 2 cups of raw meat- since on kibble, He eats about 3 1/2 cups a day. 2 cups of raw turned out to NOT equal two cups of kibble, and he was getting a bit too thin. So I stopped measuring it, and just slowly increased the amount of raw he got until he stayed at a healthy weight.

So, my advice to you is just to expirement. If all you want it to add a thigh to their food occasionally, I would just slightly decrease the amount of kibble. I also would feed the raw and kibble seperately- whenevr I've tried too feed both at the same time, it's resulted in upset tummies.

Thanks everyone. Good idea about feeding them the raw and kibble in two seperate meals, they get two small meals a day anyway so that won't be too difficult.  Thanks for the website brookcove.  And I'm just interested in this mainly for the dog's health.  My male has a little skin issues (he has a reoccuring bald spot on his head from when he had mites as a puppy - he's almost three now though!) and we give him supplements but I always wonder if vitamins and all that jazz can just be gotten through other means of foods.

My active two get between 2 2/3 and 3 1/3 cups of kibble, beef broth, 1/4-1/3 lb of raw ground beef, plus a few ounces of green beans every day.  It may sound like alot since they're both under 55lbs but we live a pretty active lifestyle that includes alot of long walks.  Plus as a pack we're recovering from Gaia's heat during which Xerxes lost about 7-10lbs, her surgery and myself being ill.  So once I can no longer count ribs/vertebrae I may cut back.

I am slowly migrating my 9 month old to raw.  She gets 2 meals per day, her kibble is 1 cup INNOVA Puppy with 2 Tablespoons of EVO canned.  For 2/3 meals per week I will subsitute her kibble meal with about 6 oz of raw turkey burger/ hamburger with some calcium and Seameal and fish oil. I will give her a meal of just scrambled eggs or a can of wild salmon and  or sardines. I used to give raw eggs as a meal but since my "raw" boy got the runs on it , I jsut cook them up now.

My raw boy is 55 lbs and gets all raw.  Either Nature Varity patties or raw burger.  He doesn't know how to eat RMB bones, he buries them so I only give a recreational raw bone inside the house.

Let's not get into the Purina debate.  It's been done to and nobody's budging.
