One more question about bones

    One more question about bones

I thought I'd give raw bones a try again.  I have only given him one, several months ago and nothing since.  I gave him a beef rib bone the other day and he ate off all the meat and chomped on the bone.  The bone seems rather hard with a little marrow in it.  He was chewing off small pieces and eating them.  I was not sure if he should be doing this so I took it away.  Is it ok for him to eat the small pieces even though the bone is really hard and could be sharp pieces?  I have a few more
rib bones for him so I was wondering what to do next time.  Thanks/Jo

My vet nixed beef rib bones saying they can be harmful even when raw. I'd probably take it away as soon as the meat is close to being gone and get knuckle bones in the future.

it is ok for him to nibble bits of bone off the rib and consume them. Problem with beef ribs is some dogs try to swallow them whole and get them lodged in the throat.

I'm glad this was brought up because I've been wondering about this, too. Sometimes the beef rib bones look even thicker than the pig neck bones I get. I've always wondered if it was safe for them as well.

The only bones Cherokee will actually consume are beef short ribs. They're not a significant portion of her diet, more like whenever I remember to buy some, but she has eaten many, and never had an issue. I'm not saying they could never cause a problem, and Cherokee is quite the meticulous chewer when it comes to them, but I just figured I'd share my experience.

On second thought, you all might be talking about back ribs, which she won't consume, just chews the meat off. It's only short ribs she'll eat.

It was a beef short rib and not a back rib.  He loves it, next time ill let him chew off pieces of the bone til it gets smaller then take it from him so he doesnt swallow a big piece.  Ill have to try
a knuckle bone next. Im just never sure where to get these bones.  If I cant find a meat market closeby ill ask the butcher at the grocery store.

I would let him chew it and get pieces off until it gets down to the last nub... thats when they will be more likely to try and swallow a large piece.

A raw bone digests quite easily, turning into a jelly like substance pretty quickly after being eaten, whereas a cooked bone may come out the other end in the same sharp condition it went in in.[:)]  Still, a large chunk of anything is not good.

I buy frozen marrow bones at the grocery store. They sell them as "soup bones" for making soup. They are large and fairly meaty, and about $5 for 5 large chunks.

Knuckle bones and soup bones are recreational though. They aren't meant for consumption.
I give Ella both on occasion[:D]

Yeah I forgot to mention that.... if you get bigger "soup" bones, he will just shave away at it and have a much more difficult time getting a piece off.  Natures Variety makes prepackaged frozen bones, or the butcher may have some you can use... although the only butcher around here that I found gave me some HUGE crazy looking bones and they stunk[&:]. (so of course I just threw them away)
