    honest kitched dehydrated food

Has anyone tried the Honest Kitchen line of dehydrated foods? I am wondering because I have been homecooking for Jetta for almost two months and she is doing great. But, I worry about whether or not I am giving her everything she needs. I supplement with calcium, oil, etc, but I still don't really trust myself. I would feel so much better if a company could balance the food for me and still have it be fresh and healthy.
Also, for those who have tried it, is it as palatable as fresh foods? Jetta gobbles up her homecooked in seconds, so I want to make sure the dehydrated food will be the same.

I didn't care for it all that much, but if you want info on what's in the various brands, go here:

    Why didn't you like it?

I didn't like it eithe r(well the dogs did) but then I only got samples for 3 days worth.  Once rehydrated, it turned into green mush.  It got all over the girls' beards (also bichons) and made a stinky sticky mess on them.
Have you looked at Strombeck's book?  Home Prepared Dog and Cat Diets.  It has complete and easy recipes in it. Great read (actually was looking through it again last night, thinking about feeding it again).

I tried it, briefly.  Oscar hated it.

He eats mostly raw, but I do, on occasion, home cook for him. When I home cook, I use Wysong's Call of the Wild supplement to be sure I balance his nutrients--I love it.

    Hope this helps.

Wolfie wouldn't touch it either (but that may not be a surprise [;)])

I was thinking about you lately and wondering how Jetta is; I'm so glad that she's doing well.[:D]  I don't know which recipes you're using but Monica Segal has a book called " Cooked Diet Recipes" for $5.95;  [linkroducts_id=87]http://www.monicasegal.com/catalog/product.php?cPath=25_26&;products_id=87[/link]  >http://www.monicasegal.com/catalog/product.php?cPath=25_26&;products_id=87]http://www.monicasegal.com/catalog/product.php?cPath=25_26&;products_id=87[/link]    The recipes aren't simple but they're carefully balanced. I ordered a few of her booklets because I was going to cook for Jessie but I have to wait until she finishes the elimination diet she's on and see if she has any new food allergies. Someone posted that the recipes in Pitcairn's book were simpler so you may want to try those.
The Honest Kitchen products are soupy but Jessie liked the one I tried, but she eats anything. They make a product called  Preference that you may want to try because you're supposed to add your own meat to it, so it wouldn't be as soupy. Good luck in deciding what to do and congratulations on finding the answer for Jetta's allergies. [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

I tried a sample bag of the "force" and all of my chihuahuas loved it.  They have a new formula out now, it's called Preference- you add your own meat to it.

I was disappointed with Monica's cooked recipes booklet.  There are a very limited number of recipes in each weight range, there is no appropriate diet for toy breeds in the book, and all of the nutrient values are based on the 1985 NRC book which is free online and outdated.

I love Dr. Pitcairn's recipes with the grain omitted (The grain is there only for cost effectiveness and he claims you can leave it out with no problems)

Mine get this once in a while, mostly if I'm out of their home cooked. Floyd eats anything, Wolfgang will eat it grudgingly and Tasha will only eat it rarely and with other food added.

My Malinois loved it, until we switched him on full raw. He did have softer, greener stools, but he was healthier than on kibble.

Our doctor reccomended a company called www.chefk9.com

Our dog has some skin issues, and we have now been using them for 6 months. My dog loves their food, I have never seen a product as good as the one they make. It is all fresh, not kibble. They apparently have had much success with unhealthy dogs, I guess thats why our doctor mentioned them. Since we started using them, our dog's skin is MUCH better.

We tried the Honest Kitchen stuff, but he didn't like it. Plus, it was kinda goopy. Chef K9's food looks like real food, tastes like real food, it is real food.

If anyone feeds a home cooked diet, or if you are looking for the best kept secret in dog food, you should try www.chefk9.com

or if you are looking for the best kept secret in dog food,

This sounds like a marketing line [8|]

To feed my bullmastiff's on chef k* would cost around $400 per month which is way out of of my price range.

meh. I don't buy into that breed specific thing.

When I homecook I do the strombeck recipes or the meatloaf recipes given to me by my holistic vet.  I'm actually considering a change in the dogs' food again. Either to Volhard NDF or the homecooked again.  Will have to see once I get through a month's worth of kibble yet.
