    Lite diets??

I've just been perusing the ingredients of some popular lite diets and it strikes me that these are not at all designed for long term use,imo some shouldnt be fed at all, short or long term [&:] It seems they should only be used to get the dogs weight down if nothing else works and then move on to a normal food with more appropriate fat and protein contents.

Here are the ingredients to one particular food,i cant copy and paste so i have to write it down myself,i have only included the "food" ingredients and have omitted the vits and mins such calcium etc.

    Protein 25%
    Fat       5% [sm=eek.gif]

    Ground yellow corn,soybean meal,ground whole wheat,soybean hulls,corn gluten meal,turkey by-product meal,animal digest,animal fat(preserved vitE),meat and bone meal,salt,added colour(red 40,yellow 5,blue 2) the rest of the ingredients are the usual vits and mins including menadione.

Now can someone please tell me how a dog could possibly enjoy good health and thrive eating a food such as the above?Surely this food should NOT be fed long term??

haha...that must be the SD light...the only company I know that would use peanut hulls as an ingredient.

But, I do think that even a vet would say NOT to feed a diet like this long term as it does not supply adequate sources of nutrients.  However, if your dog is morbidly obese and you have ruled out thyroid issues, this food would definatley result in drastic weight loss! [&:]

oooo I'm intruiged now! [;)] Although my comments still remain for the long-term effects of feeding ingredients w/ inadequate nutrients.

I wouldn't feed this primarily because it has a few things I don't want, such as the 3 food dyes.  BUT other then that, it is not meant to be fed a long time.
I looked at Eagles Reduced Formula and it says right on it that its not to be fed to pregnant or lactating females, and once the weight is at the point you want, they recommend you change over.

What do you think their main objective is?I somehow dont think it's the health of the animals eating their foods!

Christine, I recognized it as Purina Fit & Trim because I had copied and pasted the ingredients in the thread Kelly started:   [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=23043]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=23043[/link]

It is remarkably similar to the ingredients of the food Kelly was discussing which cost $2.99 for an 18 lb. bag. The difference is that people will be paying more for it since it's Purina, and think they're getting a good dog food.

Bet that'll sit nice in someone's craw.

What on earth is that supposed to mean?
    • Gold Top Dog
It means these two are purposely trying to upset someone, someone who mentioned they feed this food.  Pathetic.
    • Gold Top Dog
    yeah,,,it really is pathetic!

If you're right, then I feel horrible for participating in their game.[:o
