Meat past its prime: OK for dog?

Meat past its prime: OK for dog?

I purchased a steak today that is partially spoiled.  On one side of it, the meat is a brown/grey color, and it has a mildly off odor.

I called the store and complained about it (I bought it *today*, and it was folded up so you couldn't see the brown parts -- totally unacceptible), but I lost my receipt already so I can't return the meat.  I am not going to eat it.  Would it be safe to give my dog, though?  If so, would raw be OK or would I need to cook it for him?

    Thanks.

Hmmm,,,,,I don't worry about the brown/grey color but if it smells off I would not give it.  I have left meat out thawing overnite by accident and serve it up warm in the am or refrigerate and give in the evening.

I always say that dogs can eat stuff and be fine, that would send us to hospital, when i'm trying to reassure owners who want to try raw.BUT i'm thinking more of scavenging and bones/meat they have buried themselves to "naturally" decompose. When it comes from my own hands then NO i dont give my dogs meat that is off or even has a slight odour to it,they wouldnt eat it anyways...

Acesmom if you do give it i would cook it first or else throw it away or take it back to the store and exchange it for a fresh cut, dont need a reciept for exchanges.
Are your dogs used to raw meat?

Yeah,,,I'm with Edie on this.  Dogs might be able to handle food that would make us sick, but something that smells like its spoiled won't be given to my dog by me...bad enough she finds something outside that I wouldn't want her to eat.   I can not see that you need a receipt,,,it has the stores label on it, I'm sure they know its theirs,,, I would march it back and ask for the manager if the service desk won't take care of it...tell them you want this taken care of.

It depends on your dog: if you have a hoover who regularly eats crap then I'd say go for it. With my dogs I'd scald it and give it. If you dog is, on the other hand, used to kibble only, it might be hard on him. As for rot that occurs in the store or rot that occurs naturally; same difference. Bacteria is bacteria.

hmm, well my wife would cook that up and give it to me and save the good stuff for the dogs.

I bought about 10 pounds of chicken leg quarters that were slightly off about a week ago. I also couldn't return them. They were slightly greyish and had a not so good odor. I just scalded them really quick and gave them to the dogs anyway. They were fine, even Ogre, who gets squirty at the drop of a hat. They actually seemed to like them more than they usually do. [:'(]

If it is mostly red I would not hesitate to give it to my dog.  Confession time!  About a month ago I found a steak in the freezer that had been there for 2.5 years.  Yes I mean mid 2004.  It was frozen solid and all red.  Ordinarily I feed steak raw when I purchase it (on sale) for the dog.

This time I cooked it a little on both sides, sliced it up, and served it over the course of a few days.  I feed her mostly kibble but also give a small non-kibble snack before our walk and her bedtime.  No digestive problems and absolutely no hesitation when eating it.  Actually the next day I could not tell any difference between it and a steak that was in the fridge for everyone but her.

I routinely feed refrigerated (cooked) meat to her once it is past its people prime.  Yes that means it may smell a little off or be a little slick on the bottom side.  I may scrape off a little something but she always eats it like it friggin gourmet!!  It always gets the extra bowl licking and polite requests for more.  No meat gets thrown away in my house.  Occasionally my wife thaws some meat in the basement refrigerator and forgets about it for a few  days.  Our loss but Dakota's gain.  When its beef it may be a bit grey/brown but I do not hesitate to serve it raw.  Never had any problems.

Do we really think the meat used in most kibble is held to the same standards of freshness that we hold our meat?  My guess is that it off refrigeration a bit longer than the prime carcass cuts used in human food.

I'd feed it. Depending on how "off" it is, I might cook it slightly, but just on the outside to kill the surface bacteria. I've fed off raw GROUND beef (although with ground beef, if it was off when I bought it, as opposed to "ripening" in my fridge, I wouldn't feed it raw) many times before, and had no issue. If you're worried about it, cook it, but I see no reason why the dog can't eat it.

My rule of thumb is that if I wouldn't eat it, then neither will my dogs. JMO

My dog is nasty....she likes to eat her own poop not just any poop...but she triest to catch it as it's coming out..[:'(].... so yeah.... what else could be worst?!

But just like the above, she does bury raw meaty bones all the time...and then later on when it's all nasty... tries to take it back inside to eat.... weirdo.

No way , would I feed my dog rotten meat......Just think about the idea of the dog chomping on that and then giving you a kiss or licking your hand a few minutes  later..........

Meat is pretty nasty, regardless of it's freshness.

My dogs have eaten some nasty stuff. I don't hesitate to throw them meat that's slightly bad. I won't feed them anything moldy, or rotten, but slightly bad doesn't bother me at all. They're dogs, after all[;)]

Were guilty of feeding meat that we wouldnt eat [:-]

Like everyone else has said, nothing spoiled, just stuff thats been in the fridge over a day. I dont like to eat food thats been in the fridge over 24 hours.

I think since we've started doing this our dogs have looked better. Lizzie is growing in her coat and gaining weight. My moms dog is healthier than before and hasnt had a bout of mange in quite some time (weakened immune system).

Just last night they had an awsome feast. We cooked them up a bit of brown rice, added that to a very small portion of kibble, a bit of chicken broth with pieces of cooked chicken (no bones!) and some very yummy homemade meatballs (no onions!).

Lizzie is a very dainty eater and even she scarfed down the 'big dog' portion I set out for her!
