Which would you prefer?

Well, at least my post got people thinking!  The thing to remember is that not all foods work for every dog.  Personally, I would try the Diamond over the Sensible Choice for my boy.  I know they have had quality control issues, but they aren't the only company.  Now, if I had an allergy dog, I would probably try the Sensible Choice to try to limit the possible allergens.

Allergic usually means they have some sort of serious reaction (like skin outbreak, etc). An intolerance usually shows up through GI issues and lack of "quality" look to coat, etc.

Thanks, but I know the difference; I wanted to know what Luvntzus meant though.

If you know the difference then why are you asking? You're quizzing me now? [&o]

I'm very sorry if I upset you; I've always considered you a friend. I was just curious as to what you meant; it's your opinion then that most dogs who have a problem with grains aren't allergic to them but show dietary intolerance?

Doesn't anyone remember like 8 yrs ago the QC issues Natura was having with mold growing in their foods?  Yet everyone raves about Innova... I wouldn't be objected to trying Diamond either.

Not to mention all the other foods that Diamond manufactures, that people don't seem to have a problem with.  I originally thought the food was Kirkland, which Diamond manufactures for Costco, the ingredients are almost identical and you can get a 40 lbs bag for $16.99, I think that is probably the best bargain food there is.

Natura has since built a brand new, state of the art processing plant. I believe they are the only holistic food to process their food in a plant that they own, therefore allowing them MUCH stricter quality control. I'd actually like to visit the Natura plant someday, it sounds like a really neat place, and their research facility is supposed to be like a top of the line boarding facility (raised bed, dog tv) which is interesting, but also very cool.

Wouldn't you have to know what weight of duck and what weight of potato to compare their relative protein density

You re-stated my point, which is fine with me. You can't know, as the recipe is proprietary. They are only required to list ingredients in prevalence by weight, not volume and they don't have to tell you if it was 3 lbs of potatos and 2.5 lbs of duck meat. They are allowed by law to keep that a secret to avoid industrial espionage.

I gave Kirkland a try as well because it was definitely a good food for the price. But it stank, and the dogs stank.

The whole "gluten is bad" thing is new to me, as well as the association with epilepsy. Do you have any links for a curious and bewildered vet student?

Dogtorj.net is a great one on epilepsy and diet. I work part time (my first job is pet grooming) in a health food store. My boss is a nutritionist. He agrees with the information there. I asked him about it a couple of months ago, when Emma had a seizure. I supplement her with taurine (raw hearts) and feed her a grain free, dairy free, soy free diet. She doesn't get nuts or legumes, either. She's gone from daily cluster seizures to one or two seizures at a time, about every six months. She is on NO seizure meds, as she has liver shunts, and cannot do pharmaceudicals. We do a lot of things that aren't textbook, but she's not a textbook kind of dog[;)] We do lots of alternative stuff, including dietary therapies, accupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, and bach flower remedies.

Wysong maintains its own plant operations. Quite proudly so. Dr. Randy can be snarky about brands who need to contract their formulas out to larger businesses with their own facilities. Wysong is a heartland co. (WI) and they are very much about their high-tech processing. Randy would have you thinking he invented freeze dried, like we never heard of Tang, duh.

Personally I find it "edutaining." I use their supplements frequently and occasionally feed their canned and dry foods.

I knew you would appreciate that and I did it just for you. And, if you like, I could link to the video. As in Bon Scott, the original voice.
