I told him what I was looking for and he looked like I had asked him to bag up some reindeer heads for me.

LOL! Thanks for the giggle! [:D]

"Nooooo, I don't think we have any of that but let me show you something that is just as good!"

Ugh I hate that line! I called Pet Value a few months ago trying to find some Cali Natural Lamb for Scout. When I asked if they had it, the girl paused, obvious silence/confusion, and then said confidently "No but we have foods that are a lot better than that!"

And the miracle food was......... yep, Nutro! [&:]

IMO,These are the least healthy foods for your dogs out there:

    -Pedigree
    -Beneful
    -Iams
    -Mighty Dog
    -Eukanuba

But it's just my opinion! I only recently learned this.

OMG, you SO know that you're going to have to post pics of your dog, right?

that's because there is nothing nutritious in it. Be healthier, cheaper, and just as effective to feed your dog nothing but green beans for a couple of weeks.

Actually they lose weight on it because it's 25% protein and 6% fat; there's good science behind this food.

One of my favorite moments (regarding Beneful) was when this lady came in to the vet (where I used to work) and was concerned about her dog's dry skin.  I asked her what she was feeding and she replied, "Oh, that's not the problem...I'm feeding a food that is good for the skin and coat."  I asked her what food and she said "Beneful healthy skin." [8|]

Oh Dear! Sadly, this is all that many people know about dog food. As long as it says it on the bag, then that must be what it does...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the white bag with DOG FOOD written in bold, black letters would probably rank pretty low on the chain... but, I admit that I'm merely guessing.

My dad swore by Bil-Jac.  Any opinions on that?

" there's good science behind this food. "

ha ha you're funny. Have you read the ingredients of fit n trim?  it's mostly corn, doped up with corn gluten to make the protein % on the bag look higher (protein your dog can't use because its incomplete).  Your dog is going to eat his muscles in order to survive on this stuff- of course he'll lose weight.  The only good science I've seen on doggy weight loss is the best way to get a dog to lose weight while retaining his muscles is to feed a Low-carb high protein meat based diet (reduced fat EVO anyone?).

    Ingredients:
Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, ground whole wheat, soybean hulls*, corn germ meal, corn gluten meal, turkey by-product meal, animal digest, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), meat and bone meal, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2), choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, zinc sulfate, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, manganese proteinate, Vitamin A supplement, brewers dried yeast, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

    ha ha you're funny.

I'm glad one of us is laughing. I know Purina products are not well regarded here, and I don't feed them either although I probably would try Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach if there wasn't chicken in it.  However, the science Fit and Trim is based on ( and EVO reduced fat) is sound and that's why dogs lose weight on Fit and Trim.

My dog would sure lose weight on this crap!  A good percentage of that as muscle mass.

I believe the "complete and balanced" designation is achieved by most dog food manufacturers by using an AAFCO approved mixture of synthesized vitamins and minerals.  Basically a multivitamin.

Corn, common allergen, common allergen, sawdust*, corn protein, a smidgen of by-product meal and other animal stuff, unknown animal fat and a multivitamin is how I interpret that ingredient list.

Wow, been a while since I've looked at a bag of Fit n Trim. Yup, that would certainly make a dog lose weight. So would crumbling up those Metamucil cookies and feeding THOSE, and I'd feel better about that! Soybean meal has about 38% protien so there's some protein there too, but not even my sheep do well on SBM. [:o]
