ARRRG!!

    ARRRG!!

Well, the first day I brought TWO Bison home, Scout was thrilled. She was dancing around, waiting for the bowl to be set down, and then gobbled it up.

Day 2, Day 3: no thanks.

This is now the 4th kibble she has shown no interest in after the first couple feedings. We've tried Nutro, Performatrin chicken, Cali Natural lamb, and now this. The one switch was because of allergies but either way she has not eaten well on any kibble.

Maybe I need to accept that she just doesn't like kibble. I was thinking of getting Natures Variety and mushing it up with her kibble... will that make it more tempting?

Wow that is a tough one.  I have never had a dog turn down any kibble.  I have had them turn down canned food though.

Do you think you "catering to her" food likes makes her mor picky?  If she doesn't eat, do you then wait till next feeding or give her something that tastes better so she eats?

I only say this since my parents dog knows my dad gives her table scraps, so she wont eat any kibble anymore, or really any dog food period.  The only time is when Sammy is visiting and she sees him eating his.

I don't think it's bad to supplement kibble and I do as well - peanut butter, yogurt, canned, pumpkin, things like that.  He eats it no matter what since Sammy is NOT picky, but I think he likes it more when there is something else there as well.  But try to make it be on your schedule rather than catering to her - otherwise she will keep thinking she can turn her nose up and get something different.  Many people offer fresh veggies and other food with kibble, but I would try to liven up her kibble then maybe only give her something extra as a treat if she finishes her kibble - so maybe add canned to the kibble, but then give her something very high up there that she LOVES, and slowly fade the amount of canned down to minimal but only give her the treat if she eats it all.

I don't know if that would work for you or not, and maybe others have better ideas, but I guess the primary thing is to get the dog to eat, so if you don't mind accepting that she wants something better, then just go ahead and add something she likes all the time.  I just don't feed canned all the time as a topper since it gets expensive, but pumpkin and yogurt are fairly cheap and freezable so they last a long time.

    Hello---

My dog woud not eat kibble either.  My holistic vet and I believe that the very nature of kibble (dry and hard) actually irritated his G-I tract.  He knew it and just would not eat it until he was absolutely starving.  He always had stomach and bowel issueswith kibble(any kibble).  We also learned he has an intolerance to pretty much all grains as well as potatoes. Once we switched him to canned food, he ate very willingly.  He is currently being fed a raw diet (Nature's Variety, Steve's Real Food, Stella & Chewy's)  He has never refused a meal since the switch.

That being said, Scout may just be a dog that likes variety in her diet.  Maybe rotating kibble a bit throughout the week may help.  Also, there is nothing wrong with adding a bit of canned food with every kibble meal---it's much healthier, and may entice her to eat more willingly.  Another thought-- sometimes kibble loses its smell after being opened, so adding canned will enhance the scent of the meal.

Scout- does she JUST get plain kibble every meal or do you ever add anything?  Even my NOT picky boy JJ would not eat well if all he ever had was kibble.  I have about 8 things I rotate into their diet and all I add in is about 3 tablespoons of the "mix-in" item with each feeding.

When she doesn't eat, I just pick up the food after a while and add it onto the next serving at dinner. But as a result, she is only eating 1 cup a day on some days! [:o]

She definitely likes variety (hence the excitement upon the initial switch) but I'm afraid switching kibble frequently might upset her stomach.

I think I will either add Natures Variety to each meal, or add Evangers or something to spice it up.

Hey I can't blaim her.... brown hard kibble.... blech.

edit: JJsmom what type of stuff do you add? I am serving only kibble right now.

You can try a couple of things-
Add warm water to the kibble to bring out the aroma of the kibble. This also helps them chew- ever try to eat dry cereal? Not so easy.

You could try adding canned and mixing well.

You could also give the tough love approach and stop switching around.  Dogs are smart enough to figure out how to get us to offer something different or better each time they eat.  I had some very picky eaters and well a couple years ago and was switching all the time. It was very frustrating.  One day just decided I did not have time to be worrying and catering to them so much. Gave them their food in a bowl, left it 10 minutes. If they ate it great, if not- I saved it for the next meal.  Had one poodle hold out on me for 3DAYS! but after that the pickiness ceased and they will eat anything at mealtimes.

    Good luck=
I also think Scout is one of the prettiest dogs I've ever seen!  She's shepherd mixed with ??  do you know?  Beautiful!

As far as what I add in…I did do Evangers for a little while, but my guys have soft pooh on almost any canned food and while Evangers 100% meats were a big improvement, I stopped feeding it once I found them to do amazing on TWO canned pheasant. Once  week or so I will open a can of TWO and add into their kibble for a few days.

Once a week I crockpot and then I make enough of it to freeze a good portion for later meals so that I always have the following in the freezer:

    Crockpotted beef
    Crockpotted chicken
    Crockpotted lamb and apples

I also keep cans of wild salmon and sardines as well as pumpkin and the canned TWO pheasant stocked in the pantry for them.

I never go more than a couple of meals with the same “mix-in” and I actually buy small disposable “soufflé cups” and will portion out all the crockpotted meats and freeze them that way.  It actually is VERY economical (since I only add in a few tablespoons of meat and the broth) and it is super convenient.

TWIN had problems with her pup being picky and she decided to crockpot and it changed him from a dog that would hardly touch his meals to a dog who whines and begs for it while it is being put in his bowl.   So maybe this would be the answer for you too??

Thanks everyone! JJsmom - great ideas. I think once she gets acclimated to this food I will try the crockpotting. I was definitely hesitant about anything canned because she has soft stools as it is.

Shamrockmommy - Scout says THANKS! She is a mystery mix and we found her on petfinder. I wish I knew! I love her big ears.

    I love her big ears.

My dog's ears are prominent also but I think your's slip slightly into the radar dish category! [:D]

    We get great reception! [:D]

My boy can be finicky too, but I try not to cater to him (I think he's playing me for something better) so I leave the bowl down.  If he doesn't eat anything by the next feeding, I figure he hates it.  So what I do to get him to finish the bag is sprinkle some parmesan or romano cheese on top.  Doesn't have to be a lot at all, and it's a pretty inexpensive additive.  It smells really good and he gobbles his food right up!

You think I am a softy...you should see Dh...he is the worlds WORST at giving in and he is besides himself right now since Prudence is not eating as fast as normal and not with as much enthusiasm...he told me the other day "you need to give her more flavor..." I responded "she freakin had sardines for lunch and smoked salmon for breakfast...how much more flavor can you get!!!"   [;)]    [sm=biggrin.gif]

my dog will eat around the kibble even when i mix canned with it. I like the ingredients in the EP Holistic Select so I put it in a blender and then add about 1/4 cup to the canned. She loves it. She thinks she is not eating kibble when I know she really is! I love it!  It am also going to try the finely-ground kibble and use it in some home recipes for treats in place of any recipe that calls for flour.
