Digestive Enzymes

    Digestive Enzymes

So I was just wondering what everyone's personal preference for digestive enzymes is?  I know it has probably been gone over in the old boards but I don't really have the time to search through them (I'm studying for midterms!!!)!  Just drop an idea and say why!

    Hi.
I am using Prozyme for a digestive enzyme. I found it through a friend who found it on the internet.  I chose it because it is all plant based as my dog, I suspect, has a food related allergy to fowl and I have him on an elimination diet.  So far it seems really great.  When they shipped me the product they included tons of information on the product which I found really interesting.

I use DogZymes by Natures Farmacy.

I've been very happy with Fresh Digest from [linkhttp://www.InClover.com]www.InClover.com[/link].  It's all human grade too.  Willow's got some serious digestive issues and it works really well for her.  [:)]

Looks pretty good. Be nice if they would send you a little sample to make sure Willow wouldn't have a problem with it, these things cost so much money.

    I use Bertes ZYME.
I get it from b-naturals.com. I love all her supplements. Lew Olsen is the owner of the site, and Bertes is her line. She is also a moderator of the yahoo K9 Nutrition group, and she has bred/shown Rottweillers for many years. I also use her recipes to homecook for my Tzu. Her products have been excellent for my furbaby. :)

Azmira also makes a good digestive enzyme, which I used before. I forget the name. Look in the Azmira.com site. I mainly use the Bertes because I also buy a lot of other products from her too.

**I did use ProZyme before, but I don't like the aspergillus in it, which is a fermenting fungii. Some dogs do well with ProZyme, but my dog seems not to. Every dog is different, so while trying a new supplement, I rec that you keep a notebook and mark down any reactions (pro or con). :)

Dyan-It's really helped her, I'm on I think the fourth bottle or so.  She's had ONE flare up this whole winter, as opposed to one per month that lasted 3-4 days.  I'm not saying it's the only thing doing it, she's also on a limited diet and a prescription canned food, but it has helped for sure.  Yes, I agee, if only I could of gotten samples of the supplements I've tried over the years, the money I'd still have!

    Pamzshihtzu,
Just a quick question, I have shih tzus too and they both seem to be doing great on Prozyme. What reactions did yours have on it? What should I be looking for?

    hi ashley, :)

    Prozyme:
I had heard lots of great things about this (but my dog's breeder told me not to use it. I did anyway. She seemed to do so well!) It was shortly after using the ProZyme (about 4-5 mos later), that Sedona began with her intestinal yeast overgrowth issues (eye gunkies, shaking head, shedding top coat, rash, scooting, etc..which Tzus don't do!, scooting, rash, hives, red skin, etc...that got progressively worse over a total of 7 mos). Did the ProZyme cause it? I don't know for sure. Maybe. Or maybe it added to the problem? or maybe it didn't have anything to do with it at all? But that was the ONLY supplement I was using with her kibble at the time I first noticed issues. But, then again, I switched to a later supplement which had "yeast" in it! So? Maybe both caused it. Maybe it was the kibble? Maybe all the long history of antibiotics and other meds (vaccines, flea meds, etc). I think all of it added up, and just blew over eventually. :/

But, my thought pattern was as such:

    1. intestinal yeast is a "fungus"
    2. prozyme has aspergillus niger in it
    3. aspergillus niger is also a "fungus"...it ferments food in the gut
    4. ???? so, who knows....but it seems oddly suspicious. :/  Maybe dogs who are "allergic" to yeast ingredients in food (not to be confused with the intestinal yeast fungii), are ALSO allergic to asperguillus? who knows...I just don't chance it anymore, and rely on animal-based digestive enzymes now, instead. :)

    hth!
