    Need food advice pls

I have a small chihuahua with bad allergies not sure to what yet. He was on on of the vet prescription diets that helped with the itches but i know this isnt the best food. I have a older( 8yr) chihuahua with inoperable stage 4 med luxating patellaswho the ortho doc put on science diet j/d which i guess is still junk plus we are allergic to nuts  adn it has nut hulls in it..I want to feed them both the solid gold wee bits to both with a dermp cap or 3v supplement  and some chondroitin supp for my older pup. Is this choice a good one for my dogs with thier special situations?

    What cuties! [:D]

Solid Gold Wee bit would be a good food to try, especially since the main protein sources are bison and salmon (which may help your allergy dog).  However, if you don't know exactly what they are allergic to, you may just have to try it and see if it works....I do think the 3V caps will help a great deal though.  Have you tried allergy testing from the vet? I know it is expensive, but it is good to know exactly what they are allergic to....

    Hope this helps!

Have you tried California Natural?  Either the lamb or chicken?  These are great foods for allergy dogs because they are so simple.  For small breeds though, I use the puppy, since it has higher protein for the toys.
    Good luck.

I don't know much about the solid gold choice you are considering but another one besides CA Natural that a lot of allergy dogs do well on is Natural Balance.  Certain kibble and canned varieties of this food are made for pups with allergies.  I know a lot of people who this food has been a life saver for.

My JJ has allergies and Pinnacle by Breeders Choice was also one of the only foods that initially helped him.  Unfortunately it didn't yield good poop so we eventually took him off it but it might give you another option for food if the others don't work. We are currently on Timberwolf Orgaincs Dakota Bison and this has been fantastic for JJ, but due to the price, availability of it in some areas and the large amounts of ingredients I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a first choice for you.

My guys have terrible allergies and Maya has colitis, we have to be so careful!! Maya our fawn boxer is 6 and Houston our white boxer boy is almost two. We feed timberwolf organics, dakota bison. They are thriving on it. What adifference, now years back we did feed solid gold hundenfolcken, we fed that for almost a year and a half, not great results, very dry skin, coats weren't all that great. However, that doesn't mean it won't work well for your dogs, it's a good food. Whatever you try,as already suggested, try just the food, let that go on for a good 3-4 months, then try the caps, or some wild salmon oil which is excellent for all the things your shooting for[:)] Good luck, Im sure you'll find just the thing [;)]

Is he/she on the hills z/d? if I were you I would definnitley switch foods sophie was on that for a couple of months she lost 4 pounds on it and didin't get better she got worse(I know sometimes it gets worse before it gets better , but this worse lasted for a long time) so she was put on prednisone which is not good. IMO those hill's prescription foods are horrible. royal canin's prescription foods are much better. Why don't you try the natural balance allergy formulas if you have a petco near you I've heard that most dogs do great on them.

    P.S. your puppers are cute!

He was on IVD venison and rice and he did ok but I still think that they could have better food even with the allergies. Ivd stopped the itching but they dont really like the taste.

Welcome to idog; I agree with papillon; your dogs are adorable.[:D]  Please be cautious about changing foods. Normally I'm not a fan of Science Diet but their prescription diets have helped a lot of dogs and your dogs have serious health problems. Jessie has very bad allergies and before she started immunotherapy she had to go to the e-vet three times because of them; 2 of the situations were life threatening.
Was your allergy dog on the Z/D?  If he got better on it than he probably has food allergies. You should keep your dog on the Z/D while introducing ingredients from the food he used to eat one at a time. Start with the protein; if it was chicken then give him some chicken daily to see if he reacts; two weeks should be long enough. Next try the grain; it's usually the meat or grain that cause the problem. After you know what he's allergic to you can avoid foods with those ingredients; this is how we learned Jessie is allergic to chicken.  If your dog also has environmental allergies there are things you can do besides changing his diet; try searching the allergy threads for info.
As for the older dog I would be very hesitant to take him off the j/d; it has joint supplements and fatty acids in the right combination to help your dog.
