innova evo

I have 2 senior dogs (9 and 13) and one not quite two. One of the seniors does have some arthritis, she gets glycoflex and baby asprin. And the baby has hip dysplasia, she gets glycoflex III. the 9yo has no real issues except not changing him around a lot. I currently feed Eagle Pack duck and the salmon/anchovy forumulas. Thinking about going grain free for the "inflamatory" factor. I've narrowed it down to a couple....and I know I can get Innova Evo easily. Can you guys give me some feedback on this food?

What breed is the youngest? Evo isn't recommended for large breeds under age 2, because of the high calcium levels. Otherwise, I think it's a great food. I wouldn't feed it dry, not that I feed anything dry, but I especially wouldn't Evo, because of the amounts of protein and ash. I just think they need more moisture to properly handle the high levels of those.

My youngest is a chow. Almost 2. And yeah, I don't feed my dry kibble completely dry. I use sometimes a little warm water, sometimes cottage cheese or yogurt or maybe green beans or salmon. And for supper they get some canned mixed with a little water.

I also looked at Timberwolf Organics and Natures Variety raw instinct.

I could preach this for my entire life, but I would go with Timberwolf Organics because of their low ash.
Timberwolf is safe to feed any dog of any age. To be safest yet, I'd feed their ocean blue because the protein level isn't too high (in case you believe that too much protein can be a strain on the kidneys) and it's also a grain free formula.

I mean, out of the two I definitely would go with T.O., but I'd go with T.O. anyway because I trust their products. Nature's Variety is a good food, but I their ash content is too high for my liking and so is their protein level.

My two livestock guardian dogs eat EVO RM. It's made a huge difference for the old girl (eight) and Tully, three, looks good too.

Yep! Should be OK.
There is concern about high protein, but I've read conflicting things about it. You could check out what T.O. has to say about feeding their higher protein formula to pups on [linkhttp://www.timberwolforganics.com]their site.[/link]

There are different opinions about whether or not the ash content in high protein kibbles can be a problem; Natura did conduct feeding trials with EVO but 6 months, which is the length of a feeding trial, may not be long enough to know if the food can cause kidney problems, especially in older dogs. Canned foods or premade raw have a high protein content on a DMB and a high ash content as well but the moisture ( 78%) is enough to prevent the kidneys from being affected according to papillon, who is a graduate student studying aninal nutrition;

I agree, I say that ash content to me is a concern because most people don't like to wet their dog's kibble before feeding it. They believe it contributes to bloat. So...if the kibble is not moistened with water, then I believe it to be more damaging. The high ash, I know, doesn't matter in canned food because of the water.[

If it weren't for the cost of canned food, I'd probably feed it more often. For now I buy T.O. and water down the kibble a little bit.

yeah I add a little warm water to the kibble anyway. Just a little...I believe...whether correctly or incorrectly, that it enhances the smell of the Kibble. Now you KNOW I'm crazy, right?

I currently feed Innova EVO. I really do like the food, as there is less of an amount to feed b/c it has more calories than most foods.

I am however, switching to TWO, as I am uncomfortable feeding such a high protein/ash food for a prolonged period of time. TWO does have a grain free formula, which is a little lower in protein and alot lower in fat/ash content.

Yes, Ocean Blue & also Wild n' Natural. Both are grain free.

OB is fish based protein and W&N is chicken based (very similar to EVO)

Just FWIW, potatoes are a nightshade veggie. I try not to feed them, every week, because my dogs are arthritic. I also try not to eat them, every week[
