    Shih Tzu food suggestions

I have to admit, there are so many good food brands out there and I want to switch my dogs to a better food, but it's confusing which one to switch too. I know all dogs are individuals, but I was hoping for some suggestions. I have a 4 yr. old male and an almost 5 mo. old female Shih Tzu. He is currently on Science Diet and she Iams because that's what the breeder fed her. I was going to switch her to Canadae All Life Stages and also see if my male liked that since they can both have it. He likes moist as well and I was wondering if the pup should have some moist/canned as well. She eats so well and didn't want to spoil her with the canned. He's more of a picky eater. I also heard the Eagle Pack Holistic Fish formula is good as well, just don't know if that's appropriate for the my small breed. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Oops. Sorry. Didn't realize there was so much previous info about this.

Yea, there is tons of info here,,, but since i too have tzus [;)] i'll tell ya what's worked well for us.  Yes! on the canadae, the natural balance were all good,(make sure though its the natural balance cause theres other "natural" named ones that arnt so good as that one,  the eagle pack fish is what we're using now, and doing super great on, (the eagle holistic's are great foods in my opnion) and hummmmm, what else have we rotated??  Oh the timberwolf organics, but i *think* my girls got smellie on that, but im not excluding it before trying again.   I do get the nzymes powder for their food but only use it for about 2-3 months at a time, then stop for a bit.  Also will add yogurt, or some prozime type stuff for bout a week at a time, then fruits, vegies, meats to nearly every meal also. (either canned or crockpotted food ploped on top).. Just some suggestions, but i think you'll be happy with the canadae if that's easly available.  I was going to stick with that one, but cant help my self i just have to rotate cause i also love eagle.....  Ohhhhhh, and the wee bit was great by Solid Gold.  Nice 'wee' bits...lol   enjoy, they're such sweet doggies huh[:)]

Thanks JK. That was very helpful and will give me a great place to start and see what works for my two. If you have any recipes, I'd love to try them. What kinds of fruits and veggies do you feed? I guess I'll start with the Canadae since it's on it's way and I can always switch. My older guy doesn't have the greatest stools, so I'm worried about him. Yes, they are wonderful doggies! I personally think they are underated for their intelligence. The only issue I'm having right now is integrating my attached "baby" older male with the puppy. He wants nothing to do with her. So, that's been hard.  I will implement your suggestions. TY so much!

I have 2 shih tzus, both females. [:)] The older one is 20 months old and the younger one is 8 months. When I first got the puppy, my older one didn't want to have anything to do with her either. But things slowly changed and now they get along great. I'm sure yours will too. See attached pics below, they even sleep together sometimes! [sm=biggrin.gif] Continue giving your older dog the same amount of attention he got before the puppy came along, and do some activities together (especially walking) so they start to bond.

My food recommendations are: California Natural, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Innova, and of course Canidae. Moistening your pup's food is a good idea as she is still teething. Adding canned food is also good, try one or two tablespoons. I could never just feed my dogs plain kibble so they get canned food too. If you're afraid she will get picky, don't add the canned food at every meal. This way she won't be expecting it every time. My older dog hates kibble so she only gets canned food for her morning meals.

I also recommend rotating foods so your dogs dont get fed the same kibble for a long time. Eg. Try Canidae for 2-3 months, switch to something else for 2-3 months, and go back to Canidae etc. Regularly add some boiled meat and veggies to their food too. I give mine beef, chicken, lamb, green beans, carrots and broccoli. Mash up the veggies with a spoon so it'll be easier for them to digest. They also get egg twice a week (mostly the yolk). You can lightly scramble it, or half boil a whole egg and add the yolk part to their kibble.

And yeah they are terrific dogs!! Very smart and cute! Mine know so many commands and just love to meet people. Enjoy your dogs and good luck!

Trudy eats Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato. Love it, great for allergies, skin, coat. Yes, Shih Tzu's are just adorable, sweet furkids. Just precious.

I, too have a shih tzu---an amazing little animal.  You have gotten some great food suggestions.  I'd also like to add Timberwolf Organics to the list--the kibbles are very small, and the formulas are varied.  My friend's allergy shih tzu is doing great on the Dakota Bison formula rotating with the Ocean Blue formula.  I also know many tzu's who do great on the Natural Balance Formulas as well. Artemis Small breed formula is also a big winner with many shih tzu parents.

My Shih Tzu has done the best on Timberwolf Organics Wilderness Elk and Eagle Pack Duck/Oatmeal. He doesn't really like kibble, so I mix in either 1 tbsp canned or meat babyfood. I'm also planning on starting feeding homecooked one meal a day.

Another food that I've heard good feedback for Shih Tzus is Natural Balance (the allergy formulas).
