    Question about Feeding at Thanksgiving

    Hi all [:)]

I did a search on the forum to find out if it's a good idea to feed turkey and I found some very helpful information about it.  However, my 5 month old Shih Tzu right now keeps his curious little nose out of my food when I'm eating.  He sniffs at it briefly but then lays down.  I'm sure that will change eventually! LOL [:)]

I'm just wondering if I give him sliced up turkey (no skin, no gravy) during Thanksgiving in his bowl if it will promote the idea of begging for food, since he doesn't seem to care about what I'm eating as it is.  Someone said that he might make an association with the turkey I feed him in his bowl with what's smelling yummy on the table.

    Any suggestions? [:)]

The only way hes going to start begging is if it pays off for him...in other words, if you give in.  I always give my dogs turkey at Thanksgiving, but I also wait until everyone is done eating and everything is put away.  They get their dinner later at night, so I will put a bit in their bowl with their dog food.  That way, it is not associated with the table.

That's a very good idea, Colleen. [:)] I really don't want Cocoa to start begging at the table because I don't plan on feeding him table scraps.  But, I thought some turkey in his bowl might be a nice treat.

I definitely think I'll wait to give it to him after we put everything away.  That's a great idea. [:)] Thank you!

No problem!  Begging is something that I cannot stand!  Usually, it leads to the dog demanding other things also.  My friend has a Shih Tzu that will get in your face and bark when you are eating.  I don't like hitting dogs, but he makes me want to smack him in the face!  Hes a spoiled brat!  He even tried to chew up my rabbit cage while he was at my house and my friend just laughed!  Then, he stole something of mine and ran under the couch.  She was like "don't try to take it, he might try to bite you!"  So, I said "its mine, I'm getting it back, and if he bites me, hes going to regret it."  He didn't try to bite, but he growled, and I gave him a stern correction(no hitting, don't worry!)  After that, he listened to me quite a bit better.  Oh that dog!

Wow, some people, huh? I'd not let that dog come to my house after that, and maybe not the "friend" either! [;)]

I do think they could come closer to assocaiting it if you sat at the table and  hand fed them food.  In the dish later, I think they will just think it is something good added--ours always gets some turkey and even a bite of no no pumpkin pie.
