    solid gold changing ingredients

Solid Gold dog food is adding cracked pearl barley and flaxseed to all their dry dog foods except barking at the moon.  They are also adding taurine, tomato pomace and salmon oil.  If you go to their website and click under "news" it will tell you.  I'm so disappointed because my dog has lots of allergies, barley and flaxseed being two of them and he loves the holistique blendz, it's one of the few dry foods he can eat.  Can anyone recommend a good dry food that has no barley, flaxseed, wheat, chicken, turkey, lamb or peas in it.  He is allergic to those foods.

    Hi
I have never heard of a dog being allergic to chicken although it's possible.  EVO makes a beef based kibble now ... not sure what the other ingredients are but EVO is free of all grains, etc.

How about Timberwolf Organics Ocean Blue--it does not contain any of your mentioned allergy ingredients and many dogs find it to be highly palatable.

You may also want to try Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato--it has flaxseed oil, but not the actual flaxseed, so you may be okay.

You could try one of the DVP NB formulas that use flaxseed oil instead of  flaxseed, like the duck or venison formulas, usually if a dog has an allergy they will not be allergic to the fat or the oil, because the protein molecules have been extracted.  You might be better off with the venison instead of the duck, since your dog is allergic to chicken.

    Tzu mom,

Thanks, I looked up Timberwolf Ocean Blue and he can have that!  I will call the company tomorrow to get some more info.  What is microbials and probiotics?  Is that okay for a dog?  That is what Timberwolf uses I guess.  It says something about that on their website.  Thanks for letting me know about Timberwolf.  I know about Natural Balance, he can have flaxseed oil.  So I'll look into that too, but I think I like the looks of Timberwolf better.

    Angelwynd7,

Thanks, I will look into Evo.  I want to find a couple different foods he can have and see which will be best for him.

I second the suggestion to give Timberwolf a try. JJ has allergies to rice and this is one of the few companies that offers rice alternative grains and also some grain free formulas.  Your best bet would be the ocean blue beacause it does NOT have flaxseed or barley in this formula and the protein source is fish.   This also does NOT use flaxseed oil ...it uses salmon oil as a source of omegas.

here is the link to that food. I find it is cheapest and most convienet to order online and they don't charge shipping. [8D]

    Good luck!

    Abbysdad,

Thanks, he used to eat NB venison, but like Solid Gold better.  I have a few different dry foods to choose from, so I'll have to look into them and decide.  Yes, you are right, he can have flaxseed oil, but not flaxseed, same with chicken fat, he can have that, but not the protein.

Good luck with that...you won't get good customer service I am afraid....great food but lousy CS in the past so don't get discouraged if you don't get a person or don't get a call back.

Any questions any of us Timberwolf feeders might be able to answer for you?

    jjsmom,

That's impressive they don't charge shipping.  I am disappointed that you say customer care is not good, but as long as their food is good.  I want to call tomorrow and see if they can send me a sample of the ocean blue.  I will definitely ask questions as they come up.  Thanks again.

The food is VERY nice. It made my super allergic dog itchy (she has a problem with sea veggies) so I gave it to a friend. She saw such a dramatic improvement, with a 15 pound bag (and she has BIG dogs) that she switched kibbles. Her dogs were doing well, before she switched! It smells nice, has a good texture, and the ingredients are outstanding.

Not to nitpick but I think "shipping included pricing" is more accurate.  I believe the retail price is a couple of bucks cheaper than their web price, at least for the 4 pound bag.  Figure they have a profit model based on having a profit at the wholesale price.  I think the bigger bags have enough margin between wholesale and retail price that they can sell directly, pick up shipping, and still charge no more than retail.

My favorite retailer only carries the largest size so I'll order direct when I take the plunge.  The Ocean Blue and Wild and Natural interest me.  I have not found a fish based kibble with any higher protein level than Ocean Blue.

[:D]Dakotas Doodle- gosh…I wanna live where you live!  There are only 2 stores in my city that carry TWO and both are HIGHER on all 3 sizes than the TWO website.  One of the places in town charges over $60 for the same bison I can get online for $54.  Also, I like that I place 1 order a month for 2 33# bags and my salmon oil and canned food and that gets me over the $100 mark which means I get 10% off my order.  Brings my bags down to $49.   Maybe it is just Southern California that charges so dang much!   [8D]

My store's Bison & Elk are both $55.99 for the big bag.  The only advantage I see to buying locally is not having to time your end of bag so you get your new bag on time.  If you're paying $49 each and not having to lug 66 pounds home, your local retailers are doing you a favor!

[:D]Too true! One of the stores carries the 33# bison for $56.99, but they area 40 minute drive away in traffic (with the cost of gas...) and I still have to pay sales tax. They have NO parking by their store and crappy hours to boot!  I have been lucky...I can get my TWO shipments in only 4 business days so I don't have to pay a big ol guessing game on "when am I gonna get it".  I save the local stores as "backup" just in case. If I had a place close by that was cheap enough I would prefer to support my local area businesses...but it hasn't been an option for me thus far.    [&o]

Natural Balance Fish  is really great. Look at those ingredients and see if they work for you.
