Feed once a day or twice

Feed once a day or twice

I currently feed twice a day (730am and 430pm).  Was wondering for those who feed only once a day if they do in the morning or afternoon or evening.

    Thanks

If you feed kibble, I wouldn't feed once a day.
When we first got Ella we had to put her on an eating schedule because she would eat ALL her daily amount of kibble in one sitting causing her to vomit.
To me, I feel that it's also a risk for bloat. I don't trust once a day feedings with kibble. At least not for my 60 lb. dog.

Nope,, I would not feed once a day either.  I wouldn't want to eat only once a day,,,so I wouldn't think my dog would want to either.
I have to think that 2 smaller or even 3 smaller yet meals would be better for a dog then filling their bellies up too much with only one meal a day.

This is how we started feeding 3 meals a day...DH felt they needed another meal to look forward to and also said he couldn't do it so they shouldn't have to either. [;)

See I used to feed Rory twice a day, once at 9am after our walk and once at 7:30 pm when I get home from work but she hardly ever ate her food in the am and it ended up going bad becasue I mix wet with her kibble and it was a waste because I'd have to through it away.
I hate feeding her only once a day, i dont think its healthy. I also would feed the same amount. Do you think I should try feeding her a smaller amount in the evening so by morning time she is hungry.
Also she dosnt have seperation anxiety but I suspect one of the reasons she dosnt eat in the morning is because trhat is when I am getting ready for work and she is using that time to bask outside in the sun before she is locked in the house. Also in the eveings she will NOT eat unless my husband I are settled and it dosnt look like we are leaving soon. I know that is one sign of SA but she has always been like that and never displays any other sign

Mine get fed twice a day, just a little kibble and sometimes a spoon or topper (a couple of spoons of baby food squash or sweet potates, a little cottage cheese, some doggie rice pudding.  Then tney get about twice as much at supper and this includes their home cooked.  They all eat down everything every meal.

I would feed smaller meals. the same amount of food, only half and half.

I feed two meals and a small snack of kibble before bed, with my guys, if they went too long with out food in their bellies they'd throw up bile, and that started a whole big problem. We always have fed at "least" twice a day ( more frequent when they are pup's of course) but started giving a small snack before bed and this has stopped the problem. Good luck!!

I feed a very small meal for breakfast (everyone has different foods, so it varies between a little bit of raw to a little brown rice, to a little canned.) Whatever they get for breakfast, its a very small amount. Then they get an afternoon snack of a cookie, a tablespoon or so of canned, and a stuffed bone. Then they get their main meals of raw or kibble for dinner.

I would split her daily food amount into 2 dinner amounts.
If she eats 3 cups a day, split it into 1 1/2 cups twice a day.
Feed her in the evening 1 1/2 cups. Try another 1 1/2 cups in the morning and if she doesn't eat it, well, then she doesn't get fed until the evening. This way she might only eat 1 1/2 cups for like 2 days, but she'll eventually get hungry enough, I think, to start eating twice a day.
I mean, this is what I did with Ella. She wanted to eat once a day. I didn't like that much kibble at one time sitting in her tummy, plus it would make her vomit.
I split her feedings up and if she didn't eat a meal then she didn't get anymore food until the next meal.
It took, at the most, 2 times of doing this before she caught on and now she eats what I put in front of her and when I put it in front of her.[;)]

Wolves eats twice a week if they are lucky, same with lions and other wildlife.  Sure most dogs are domesticated pets, but let's not personify them to human standards.   Personally, I don't think feeding once a day will do any harm.

Thats makes sense, maybe I was overfeeding her in the a.m.
I feel so bad taking her food away if she dosnt eat it but I need to stick to the plan. Thanks!

I disagree when kibble is the food.
    That's just my belief though.
I think that feeding once a day could possibly contribute to bloat.
I think 3 cups, sitting in dog's stomach all at once, is not good for them.

Feeding raw is a different story.

    Sheprano,

I know what you mean. I felt horrible for doing it to Ella at first, but it got to the point where I was having to hand feed her kibble because she became so picky. I was also sitting next to her on the floor.
    It was driving me crazy.
So I had to become thick skinned because it definitely bothered me more than it did her.[:D]
Rory is smart, she'll catch on fast.[;)]
Plus, you know how pit bulls are, they are SO eager to please their humans!

Deep-chested breeds especially should NOT be fed just once a day since they are prone to bloat/torsion which is often fatal. Dogs such as sighthounds, setters, Great Danes, ect should be fed 2-3 smaller meals moistened before serving. No strenuous activity 1-hour prior or after feeding. Feeding from a raised bowl may or may not aid in digestion, studies have been inconclusive....

I'm sure my dogs would only want to eat twice a week if they got a whole zebra or carrabou at each meal [;)]
