Just talked to Purina

    I used to feed Purina
    ORIGINAL: meilani

I think it would be a bit more informative if posters (not just meilani [:D]) were more specific on the variety of food, not just the brand.  Purina has several varieties of kibble and their ingredients differ a fair amount.  Same with Science Diet, Solid Gold et cetera.

They range from (close to) colored, flavored, fortified sawdust to halfway decent stuff.

Very good point.  I tried to make that point in my first post in this section, but I didn't do it as well as you did.

Eh, I won't hang anyone for what they choose to feed their dogs. To each their own. One thing though, Sandra... don't you supplement your dogs feed with home cooked? If I'm not mistaken, you don't exclusively feed Purina. I think that can make a world of difference as well.

My dad's dogs all lived long healthy active lives on the Purina Dog Chow alone.  But I do add home cooked for mine not just because I want to make sure they are getting plenty of meat, but also because they enjoy it so much.  I love to cook, boys are grown & gone, hubby on the road 2-4 weeks at a time, so i do enjoy cooking for my dogs, I enjoy watching the looks on their faces when they know it is supper time, a mixture of the cooked and Purina One (only get dry in the morning as a rule.).

I have never denied feeding my dogs home cooked, in fact have often told of what I fix for them (but someone doesn't approve of that, thinks I am looking for back pats).  I have never denied giving them sups, joint sups for my almos 12 year old golden with some arthritis in lower spine and hips (he is on the bed watching me now) and for my 7 year old golden who had both knees operated on, the first at 16 months, the other about 14 months later.    I give them fish oil (as do many othes here) because it is suppose to be good for their heart and circulation, skin and coat. And vitamin E bcause i give them fish oil.  I give them a multi vitamin each day and they also get an EsterC, which i started for their immune system, but have learned it is also good for joints.    Because Buck, the old man, had a kidney infection 4 months back, i also give him a cranberry cap each day.

I eat proper and balanced for the most part, yet i still take a multi vitamin, EsterC, fish oil, cranberry, fiber caps, Garlique, B Complex, and the joint sups.
I have felt it would dishonest to get on here and say all i gave my dogs was the Purina, which all my dogs in years past before I home cooked did just great on, and these probably would as well.  You don't tell the beginning (I feed Purina One) and the ending (They are all in great health) and not put in the middle (I cook for them and give them sups)  You gotta tell the whole story, full in the center of puzzle, not just do the outside pieces, etc.

btw I had a cat who ate purina food, most of her life and she lived to be 18.  So, I just had to add that.  She was never sick til the very end.  She was and indoor cat and I never brought her to the vet after her first shots - she would have a heart attack going to the vet.  Now I will get flamed for not taking her to the vet- just remember 18 years old!  Wish my dogs would live this long.

I'm glad your cat had a long life.

BUT.  You should not be afraid to post something for fear of being flamed!  Is that what this board has become?  One where its members do not post something, because they think others will flame them?  That is ridiculous ... [:@]

Honestly, I think everyone's in a bad mood today.

If your daring enough to rock the boat, then you should be prepared to be slammed.  I make daring statements occasionally and I am prepared for someone to disagree.  Afterall, that's whats a forums about ..."Getting on your soap box."   That and helping the occasional people who really come here for help.

There's a big difference between rocking the boat by blatantly saying something that would warrant being flamed and admitting to feeding an unpopular brand (on this forum) of dog food.

I'm sure there are plenty of members with unpopular things to say, but they refuse to spill the beans.  Why?  Because they think the others will slam them for it.  That isn't right.  Helping people does not mean we should belittle them for something we personally would not use/feed/do.

I will never spend a dime on Purina products.  Any of them.  They have a VERY anti-pit bull vet speaking at some sort of engagement sponsered by them....

THIS household doesn't support such people.[sm=evilfire.gif]

try really hard not to flame people who enter this forum telling us they feed Ol'Roy or Kibbles and Bits or Moist and Meaty

Actually I don't think any of these brand feeders post here, or else don't admit to what they use.  I have noticed dozens of names at the top of a thread as being on it, but never have I seen a post.  Maybe they just like to lurk and read what others say, maybe they don't feel they have anything to add.........or maybe they feed one of the above named foods or purina or pedigree or whatever and see what happens to ones that do admit--no that is not a good word, I don't admit i use purina, i say i use it purina--and don't wish to catch a lot of flak over it.

In the past i have been told I was brain washed, gullible, uneducated, to old to change, and a few other things. That is enough to keep a non premium  dog food feeding poster from wanting to post....or if they do, not admit what they feed.  It would have been so easy for me to get on here all excited that i had switched to XX brand and my dogs are doing so much better, and then many would be congratualtiing for "learning" and switching to the dog food their does best on.  But that would a total lie.  So I will continue to tell the truth about what I feed, and if for some unlikely reason i ever do HAVE to switch, I will post it right away.

This is probably true...but then how many of us do NOT supplement our dogs food,, no matter what brand they are eating?  I know I feed Eagle Pack and I add meat at supper, raw egg at breakfast and yogurt to both meals,,,not to mention the probiotics that I use.

I don't.  DH would freak if I cooked for the dogs (I don't cook for him--lol).

I want to add to this, if I may. I try really hard not to flame people who enter this forum telling us they feed Ol'Roy or Kibbles and Bits or Moist and Meaty. Technically these people fit into the "have no clue" category. But, come on, at sometime in the back of their minds they must have thought that all those color, the rotten smell, and, in the case of Ol' Roy, the cheapest, most generic dog food was not good for their dog. I always use the analogy "You buy the cheapest dog food on the shelf to feed to your dog for every meal, but I bet you don't buy the generic cheap coffee or shampoo, do you?"

Jojo-  i totally "get" where you are going with this and do agree...but I do want to add that I think many people feel that the food can't be bad if they are allowed to sell it. They assume that the industry is well regulated and wouldn't sell stuff that was unhealthy to feed your pet.

It is the same with EVERY industry..especially beauty products.
As far as shampoo...I buy Suave & Tresemme BUT I also buy ;Pureology at $25 a bottle.  I read the "cosmetic cop" books and she goes through all the brands from cheapest to most expensive and breaks down their ingredients to help you figure out what products can be harmful, BUT also what is complete marketing BS and a total waste of money!   Doesn't matter if the product is $1 or $50...they all make false claims because of lack of really good regulation.     Wish she would do a pet food book! I had read an article a year or so ago that said the "Aussie" brand IS one of the best,,,if not THE BEST of all of the hair products.   And you can get that in any cheap store.

[:D]Now you got me curious Dyan...so I looked up on her website what it says about that brand.  Looks like they only have 3 of the Ausssie product reviews on her website, but in my 1000 page book at home I have the bulk of them reviewed.
Like most compnaies...looks like they have some good stuff and some so-so stuff.  Here is the link in case you are interested.[;)]

Being Australian, my Mom tried that Aussie and the awfulest rash on her head and like to have drove her crazy for a few days.  I had no problem with it, my one DIL uses it.  In my many years i have tried everything from Breck (is it still around) to Suave to avon to VO5 and everything in between....including some from the beauty shop.  I now use Pantene and find it does the best for my hair

I used to feed Purina Puppy Chow, Dog Chow and Purina One. I fed Pedigree Adult and Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice. I'm aware that the Puppy/Dog/One doesn't compare to the "higher" end varieties but in all honesty, I wouldn't feed those either. I don't think they're worth the price for what you get.

I've never supplemented my dogs food. They get kibble and Shelby gets raw 3 days a week(Shiloh and Souffle won't touch it).

To be fair to Glenda, she has recently offered advice, experience, etc., and been called diminutive names for it, a form of shredding, or let me say bashing, as that word draws attention, too. It's human nature to get a bit shell-shocked when  few times of some one taking strong exception to what you say results in name-calling, etc. True, it's only a forum of opinions but I have drawn ire and created tangential thread arguments, simply by using one word instead of another. And the worst of that ire came from plenty of others, not Glenda.

You realize, of course, you may force me to break out the chocolate.

Mmmmm chocolate! I can go for a Caramello bar right now. [:D]
