best dry dogfood for sensitive stomach

    Hi all.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there was a good dry dogfood for a 7 month old pup (GSD)with Inflammatory bowel disease. He`s on meds now. 20 Ampicillin 500 mg.
Our vet said this may cure him, it may not.
She gave us a recipe for homemade diet.
1/2 c cream of wheat cooked to make about 2 cups.
    1.5 cups cremed cottage cheese.
    1 larger hard boiled egg
    2 TBSP dried brewers yeast(inactive)
    3 TBSP granulated sugar
    1 TBSP vegetable oil
    1 tsp potassium chloride3
    1 t (4.5 g) dicalcium phosphate2
    1 t (5 g )calcium caronate
again I have to say, we have to finish these meds first.
Tonight was his first pill, so if anyone could tell me if they have had any experience in this type matter any response is appreciated, thanks so much.

You just have to search what food you want for your dog, & I'm sure they would have listed for senstive stomachs. Just be sure it's good quality dog food.

Elizabeth, why's there no meat in your recipe? My first thought was wheat, bad for dodgy tummies, and where's the protein coming from?

Very good point Edie. I forgot to ask, Animals must live on "MEAT". Being on a veggie diet is not good for your dog period!

I would venture to say this is just a temporay diet to get problems settled.   Kind of like the jello and unflushed toilet water (broth) you ge after surgery.

What were you feeding prior to Vet diet?  Thanks.  Charlie

For IBD vegetarian diets are often prescribed short term to get things in the colon settled.

Elizabeth209, some books for you to pick up are "The holistic Dog", "All you ever wanted to know about Herb's for Pets" and Dr pitcairns book for some home made recipes.

In these books they strongly recommend a home prepared diet using tofu, venison or rabbit as protein sources....follow an 8 week allergy diet.

The only food I can think off off hand that you may be able to work in would be California Natural.  Choose one of their novel protein sources. California Naturals is a bland food.  Of course let things heal first...and I would go for canned or small amount of kibble mixed with canned.

There are many herbs that will help reduce inflammation in the colon as well.  One recipe is:
    ;parts slippery elm or plantain
    1 part marshmallow root
    1 part licorice
    1 part fennel seed

If making this from dried herbs give 1 tablespoon of dried herbs.  if low alcohol tincture 1 milliliter....if making a strong tea give 2 tablespoons of tea twice daily.[;)]

Elizabeth, It must be terrible going through this.  I really admire you for your courage and doing all you can do to help your pup pull through.

A homeprepared cooked diet would be the best route.  Your dog would not be able to tolerate any raw foods.  I love adding herbs to my dogs diets and have helped our old Newf Cassie through some health problem periods with holistic health.

Do you have any holistic/homeopathic vets nearby for suggestions of how to heal your dog.

I dont know Cally, I`ll have look into that, our vet did give us recipes for Homemade diets.
Im really hoping that the meds she gave us to give to him will work for him.
    He`s such a good boy

    What are his symptoms?

Reason I ask is my rescue boy had very loose stools, the end part of the stool being almost liquid.  Kibble's and canned did not agree with him.  When I switched him to raw (a balanced and correct raw) like Natures Variety, his stools became perfect.  Anytime I venture off,,,or he eats the puppys kibble,,,bingo,,,loose stools again.

    HI Hollysmom,
Well we got him at almost 7 weeks of age, seemed very healthy, but loose, to liquid poop.
We thought it was a diet change, well he`s 7 months now, same problem, seems healthy, but loose poops, we were feeding him Innova, he loved the food , but it was bad for him, changed it to lamb and rice, not as bad but still loose. Once in a while he`ll have a firm poop, but not often.
He was also eating his poop, vet said could be due to lack of enzymes in his body, have had fecal test done twice, now hes on meds Ampicillin 500mg every 12 hours.
I just hope its a bad bug, but were gonna make it right no matter what.

ME TOO, ONE OF THE NICESTS SMELLS ON THIS EARTH.

I'd try one of California Natural's formulas, or one of Natural Balance's allergy formulas. One protein, one carb, no spices or anything fancy.

I hope you find something that works for him, long term.

Awww, poor guy, that must be terrible.

Penny had ongoing digestive issues for a while. It wasn't IBD or even pancreatitis, but it seemed her digestive system was being sluggish and irritable and every couple of months or so she'd get dreadfully sick and be unable to keep anything down and we'd have to take her to the vet and put her on chicken and rice and all the rest. In the end, I put her on a homecooked diet recommended by my vet and she hasn't been sick since. I'd really recommend a homecooked diet for a pup with bowel problems. It sure did wonders for Penny. It's not as hard as it sounds.
