raw feeders and poop: Question about not pooping

So, we all know that dogs on raw food tend to poop less.
But Ella will sometimes go as long as 2 days before she poops.
She doesn't act in pain, but I get concerned so I either fast her a little bit or I feed her kibble.
Sure enough, when I feed her the kibble she'll then poop.
It's ALL T.O. poop too, I know the difference between what a T.O poop looks like and a raw poop looks like.
Anyway, I know this is probably linked to a lack of fiber.
I'm going to try a carrot mush with her and see if she eats it.

Do any of you experience this with your dogs on raw?

Oh, I should mention this happens when I feed her RMBs.

If you do, what do you give to aid in helping them poop?
Is there something besides a veggie mush I could give her?
She's not acting in pain, but I just feel that she SHOULD HAVE TO poop.

Either she's not getting enough so that she's using every single morsel she takes in (not likely) or she's getting too much bone, but that's not likely either if everything she DOES poop out is T.O.  You might want to PM Lauric and see what she suggests.

    thanks, I shall!

She JUST pooped this morning, like 5 minutes ago on our walk. It was a healthy amount to and the consistency was healthy. Not hard like a constipated poop might be.
Weird because I only fed her half a cup of T.O. at around 730 am and in less than 2 hours she pooped out a T.O. induced poop.
Strange, I didn't think kibble digested that fast. But I'm kind of clueless when it comes to a dog's digestion.
    • Gold Top Dog
Kibble doesn't digest that fast, so it is unrelated....

I agree that it shouldn't, BUT there is a pretty clear difference between raw poop and kibble poop and it's quite likely that the OP knows the difference.

I *think* that mudpuppy feeds primarily raw as well and she's around more, so you might try pm'ing her.......

As you know, Ginger is fed all raw. Before raw she pooped like clockwork - twice a day, every day. Now she sometimes goes a day, day and a half between poops. For example, if she poops this morning, she might not poop again until tomorrow night. Plus, she is fasted some, too, so that takes down the predictability factor some, IMO. Doesn't seem to be constipated, belly is nice and flat, she feels fine. She is a VERY easy keeper, and appears to be using the majority of what she's eating. I don't worry about it too much.

Oh, and if you think its a fiber issue, you could always add some canned pumpkin, veggie mush, or both. ;)

I tried that, but Mudpuppy doesn't allow for PMs.

    I PMed Lauric though.

    Thanks, guys.

    Dogslyfe,
That's the thing! Ella's tummy is not hard or round either, no signs of constipation pain. Her energy level is good. She's not a working dog, but I do take her on walks, but not overly long ones. She's used to a bike ride every day, though, but that stopped about 2 weeks ago because my fiancee is injured and can't take her, and she pulls me off the bike when she gets interested in something or if she just decides to stop and poop in the middle of the road. I have a bad lower back so it's kind of out of the question for me to bike ride her right now.
Could she just have a higher metabolism anyway?
I feed her 2% her body weight which for a 60 lb. dog equals out to be 1.2 lbs of food a day (which translates to 1 lb. 3 oz.).
I did take her to the vet about 2 weeks ago and she weighed in at 57 lbs. so she lost 3 lbs. I figured that happened because we probably exercise her more than what she got at the shelter. But I still feed her according to what a 60 lbs. dog would need.

Oh, and the weight loss could also be because we don't feed her Science Diet (which they did at the shelter) and I was told that that is a fattier food.

    *edit*
Also, I can TRY some steamed, mushed up carrots mixed in with ground meat, but that's the only way she'll eat any veggies for me. She is 100% a meat and dairy lovin' dog. She's not interested in much else.

Ginger's never been much of a veggie girl either, but you could try what I did in my last veggie mush to help her eat it. I put into my food processor:

    Romaine lettuce
    zuchini
    squash
    peaches
    cucumbers
    pumpkin
    garlic (2-3 cloves)
    apple cider vinegar
olive oil (just to smooth it out)

Then I added a couple sardines - just to up the stinky factor. I pureed the whole lot, then dished into ice cubes. Froze them, then popped them out into freezer bag. Every night she gets one cube - totally frozen. She eats it first.

Less exercise *may* be slowing down her production. Also - check her water intake. ;)

How much bone are you feeding her compared to meat ?

I do agree that raw poop is very different than kibble poop (I worked at the Carnivore Preservation Trust for awhile and cleaned up many raw-fed tiger and small cat poos, lol).   I was just saying that kibble will not be digested in two hours :)

Chewbecca---if the energy level is good I wouldn't worry about the skipping a day or two.

Penny is prone to sluggish digestion and has had bowel blockages before, so I get pretty nervous if she doesn't poop one day. I give her a dose of paraffin to get things moving. It's tasteless, so she doesn't mind it on her food.

All our dogs lost weight when we took them off kibble. Penny lost 2kg, which was about a fifth of her body weight. Vet said it suited her. She wasn't exactly pudgy before, but losing all that weight appears to have been good for her, especially as she had arthritis in her hips, which has now mostly cleared up. She is now extremely trim and hasn't an ounce of excess flesh on her. She looks fantastic.

Let's see...when she gets bone, it's usually the bone in a chicken leg quarter, pig necks, and last night for the first time she got a turkey neck. Oh, and a turkey thigh, but the bone in that was not very much.

I steamed some carrots today and mushed them and made a yogurt/carrot mix for her and she LOVED IT.
I don't know why I didn't think to add it to her yogurt.
She eats just about anything as long as it's added to yogurt.
