Gee Janice, I never even thought about toxoplasmosis,,,I kind of thought that was a "thing of the past!"  Guess not!

My point of view is critical; I won't take what he/she says as fact without proof. If I do decide to go raw... there is plenty of documentation. I am one of those who considers dogs and wolves of the same specie; there for, a study on the natural diet of wolves will do for me.

He has been studying wolves for over 20 years (he says) doesn't that qualify him to be an expert on wolves?  Unless you have read something I have never found, the documentation that we read is from dog owners that have gone to raw feeding and swear their dog is healthier.  So if we are to listen to THOSE experts, why wouldn't we listen to the wolf expert?  They are  observations on both sides.
Hate to repeat anything he says if some of us are thinking he doesn't know enough about wolves and dogs,,,but this sure makes sense:
Pomeranians, corgis, labs, jack russells (for example) and most of the other breeds we have today did not evolve from wolves over thousands of years. They are man-made breeds that have come about from our intervention with genetics. Domestic dogs are similar to wolves but there are many genetic differences --- wolves have a different dental structure (size and angle of teeth) and completely different skull measurements. From the nose to the top of their head, it's flat with no indentation....the area by the ears is much wider than a domestic dog. Wolves mature physically at a completely different rate.

There seems to be conflicting information about bears. These websites say they are omnivores:

I too was surprised to learn that it's in 20% of pork and lamb, as well as 8% of beef, and this information comes from a veterinarian who supports raw feeding. I doubt if most people monitor the temperature of their freezers.

Bears are omnivores. Heck, one bear broke into a friend's cabin and drank a bunch of motor oil!

Bears eat lots and lots of berries. They also eat moose, salmon and lots of bugs and grubs.

I don't need to prove this, dang it. I live in Alaska with BEARS. [sm=crazy.gif]

Has anyone read the following book?
Raw Meat Diets for Cats and Dogs? An Assessment of the Research and Arguments Related to the Advisability of Feeding Raw Meat-Based Diets to Cats and Dogs  by James O'Heare
Here is the link: [link>http://www.dogpsych.com/rawquote.html]http://www.dogpsych.com/rawquote.html[/link]
"Raw Meat Diets for Cats and Dogs? is an objective and critical evaluation of the advisability of feeding a raw meat-based diet to pet cats and dogs. It reviews the scientific literature on the issue and explores the arguments for such a diet. Most sources that have previously explored the topic have been decidedly non-objective. If you are interested in taking a careful, critical and objective look at this dietary trend Raw Meat Diets for Cats and Dogs? is the book to read."

I am not for or against feeding raw and am currently feeding Nature's Variety raw frozen. I think it is a good idea to read as much as possible from as many sources and be objective.

I am curious about that book. However, I closely monitor and search the medical literature for good scientific studies on dog nutrition, and none have been conducted on raw feeding (except for the infamous multi-generational cat experiment), so what could the book possibly contain?

It's hard to say "raw meat" is dangerous. So many dogs for so many years have been fed raw meat by so many people, and well, they aren't dying like flies. In fact most look pretty darn good. Very few performance dogs seem to be fed on exclusively kibble diets anymore, as far as I can tell. The exception seems to be conformation show dogs, who really aren't expected to do much except look plump and pretty for a few years. Those lean glossy 11-year-old agility dogs who are still tearing up the courses, well, very rare to find one that has been fed on nothing but kibble. Sled and racing dogs have never been fed kibble diets.

Oh gosh, I know I'm sounding like a broken record,,,but since I started feeding Eagle I've been reading about the sled dogs...so I just HAVE to put this link here.

Dont the Itidarod support eaglepack. However i would be interested to know how much of their diet is actually eaglepack?? I cant see such high energy elite athletes being sustained on kibble, especially a lowish protein/fat one.

I can't open that link!

NEW! Eagle Pack ULTRA Formula
No doubt others will try to copy the Eagle Pack ULTRA Power Formula. What mushers should remember is that no other brand has as many Yukon Quest/Iditarod combined wins as mushers using Eagle Pack formulas. ULTRA also fueled 3 of this year#%92s Quest winners, no small accomplishment. No new experimental/competitive brands will have Eagle Pack#%92s history of success.
The formula features 34-36 % meat meal protein from real meat and 24-26% fat. A unique fat blend uniformly releases energy over a longer period of time.

It seems they also supplemented with fish and/or beaver at one point.
• Gold Top Dog
The power formula only has 30% protein and 20% fat. My little shih-tzu's get way more than that in their food, not that this is a viable comparison. But i just can not see mushing dogs thriving on only this food, surely they would need way more P%F along with real meat sources of the same.
