"Raw Meat: A Dangerous Fad"

Man once lived on raw meat too but I tend to think that if we were forced to eat it raw nowadays, all the time, we may get more than an upset stomach.

That is the direct result of factory farmed meat. It is *NOT* what meat is supposed to be. I'd go as far as to say that it probably isn't safe, long term, to consume. It's foul and disgusting. It's genetically modified and not kept in sanitary conditions. People eat raw fish, all the time. It doesn't hurt them. It's fine for people to eat raw meat. It's the contamination that we can't handle.

However I do think that we have to remember that our animals are not wild animals.  They have been altered to fit into our lifestyle.  Physically altered.  I highly doubt that a Shih Tzu would have evolved into the dog it is today without the help of Man.  Wild dogs would not likely resemble an Old English Sheepdog naturally.  So I wonder if it is possible if we have indeed altered them to a point of changing what they can and cannot safely consume.  Man once lived on raw meat too but I tend to think that if we were forced to eat it raw nowadays, all the time, we may get more than an upset stomach.

All I have to say is, that's a very interesting point you made.

*Edit* This one is interesting too...

I have mentioned similar things before regarding evolution. It's not perfect and just because an animal has a survived a certain way long enough to procreate does not mean that's the best way to survive. Maybe you'll have better luck with it than I have. And I agree that there is a difference between dogs and wolves, from the abilities and size of their stomachs to the shape and functions of their mandibles, primarily due to differences in the coronoid process of each species. Plus, dogs have been eating at the largess of man for 100,000 years while wolves hunt and think as they always have. They don't need man.

Fair enough if we are giving our dogs only non contaminated meat.  I taste my hamburger for seasoning too but I wouldnt eat alot of it.  I also thought (and I may be wrong on this one) that the people that live on strictly raw diets ate mostly veggies and that the raw thing was more about restricting processed foods.

Ozzie, I cant eat dairy but my BF can and we could have a baby.  I understand your objection but I believe that if the chemical makeup of a dogs brain can be different why not the specific tolerances it has to certain foods.  I'm not disagreeing with you and I'll admit its not something I have done much research into but I think it is a valid point anyway.

From what I understand of genetics, dogs and wolves can mate because of a similarity in mtDNA, not because of a any possible similarity in GIT. Any similarity in GIT would an accident.

Some of the raw foodists I've "met" eat meat. Lots of people eat sushi. I'd really like to eat a raw, vegan diet, but it's not feasible at the moment. I don't eat meat, but that's about as far as I've gotten. A raw diet for people takes almost as much research as a raw diet for dogs (not that I'm eating a balanced diet, now, b/c I'm not, but I want to do it right, so it'll be beneficial when I do it). It is mostly about not eating processed stuff, and getting the most out of the food, just like with dogs.

But the people that eat alot of sushi also know the dangers of it and just what is safe.  Not all sushi is safe.  Alot of it comes from farms where they add stuff to it and it becomes bad.  Also some is only good at certain temps, times of maturity etc.  Its tricky. Also not all sushi is raw.

I do love sushi. I've learned though never to get sushi from restaurants that aren't SUSHI restaurants. By that I mean your regular chinese restaurant that offers sushi at a bargain price warrants pause.

Yes, I know:) I love avocado rolls and any other veggie sushi. I don't eat fish, at all, b/c.... it's gross;) But... I know a lot of people who eat raw sushi, and enjoy it very much, with no ill effects.

But I bet those people know what they should and shouldn't eat or at least where to get it.

Sure, I guess. I really don't know. The point was that people can and do eat raw flesh, on a regular basis. It's not a problem for them, or for dogs, cats, lions, tigers, or bears, oh my!

We have coyotes that come around our house from time to time. My dad was actually thinking of trying to bait them in with dog food....now that people bring up the point of if a wild canid would choose dog food or raw meat, I wonder if they would take the dog food(?) Maybe if it was all they could find. When my dad butchers chickens (we live on a farm) he throws the raw by-products out in the field and at night the coyotes go crazy.
To be honest, I'm personally not a believer in evolution, but that's just IMO.

    1. By bait them do you mean catch them or poison them?
    2. Don't you think the influx of coyotes has something to do with your dad's habit of throwing offal into the field? It's a free lunch.
