YUK.  I remember when I was in the 6th grade, our teacher was telling us her nephew had been stationed in Korea and had talked about them eating dogs over there and I found that so horrible.  After all, dogs are pets, companions, workers, not food.

Yikes!  I don't even know if I agree with their assumptions of this breed.  I know I should not bash other culters for what they eat but it really does get to me.  Especial how these dogs are treated and breed.

Not always so in other culture. Indian people might call *us* barbarians for eating cows and could reason "they're holy creatures, not food."

Even then, it's a *very* small percentage of Korean peopple who eat dogs. It's been illegal to serve dog in restaurants since 1988. While it is possible to find restaurants that do so and some people (mostly middle-aged men) do eat dogs, most people have never in their lives and consider dogs to be pets due to Westernization of the country.

We shouldn't be so smug, either.  It wasn't so long ago that dog was considered to be acceptable - if a little exotic - in Western states, on the frontier.  Maize-fed dog was a real delicacy in many Native American cultures and was generously offered to visiting representatives from European cultures, who usually had no problem politely partaking.

I think we do have to draw a line - mine is at higher predators and scavengers.  I won't eat shark or several other deep sea carnivores and it turns out that's probably a good thing.  Bear, cat, wolf, dog - definitely not.  I'm on the fence about swine.  My dogs eat it, and we do too - pork is SOOO good and SOOOOOO cheap around here.  Sigh.  I guess everyone needs a contending point in their principles.  [;)]

If you're eating factory-farm raised animals of any kind currently, you're not really in a position to judge.

It's very comparable to how we raise cattle, but the breed assumptions of the Saint Bernard in this article seem to be a little off.  Or have they actually breed the dog to look, grow and behave like that?

*shrugs* The way most Americans think of cows, pigs, and chickens is a little "off", too. All of them are beautiful, intelligent creatures. They learn words, establish relationships with humans, and love to run and play (ever seen a cow *frolic*? it's hilarious!). None of the above are stupid or senseless, any more than a dog is stupid or senseless.

It so true, but so difficult to part with my western style of thinking concerning these issues.

It is:) It's all just cultural. I had no idea, til I started spending time with cows.

I'm a vegetarian, so I do not believe in eating any animal.  However, I think it is disgusting to eat any predator animal (dogs, cats, sharks, etc)... especially dogs.  I know that we should respect all cultures, but it really gets to me how we are the most intelligent species, yet we could eat our own companions.

I'm afraid i CAN NOT respect any culture that raises dogs for food [:@].They eat some weird s**t over there, stuff that shouldnt even be considered food, especially not in the 21st century.[8|]

Ir kinda gives extra meaning to the menu item, chow mein. I could very well be someone's chow. Next, there will be a new chinese cookbook. "101 Ways to Wok your Dog", by Hoo Flung Doo.

I won.t eat wharka either and it really tickes me off that the orientals will catch  sharks, cut off their fins for shark fin soup and then throw the finless sharks back into the water leaving them to be killed by other sharks
