Nutro Ultra or Canidae....is their much difference??

I was wondering if any of you great people out there could help me...please. I've got my little man Bruiser ( my soon to be 3 month old Boxer puppy) on Nutro Ultra puppy right now, he's doing just fine on it with the expection of having of some gas. I was really wanting to use the Canidae ALS on him as I've heard it does wonders for gas prob. & stool amount/size etc. In your opinion is there much difference?? I've of course compared ingred./analysis & there comparable pretty much it seems, But I was wanting some of your thoughts on this matter (i.e., has anyone used both brands & which did they like better or work better in their case & also did anyone see a noticable difference in the two with gas/stools etc.???? I would really appreciated any of your thoughts, imputs, &/or suggestions.   Thank you  so much for any of your wisdom/help!!![sm=happy.gif]

Oh I think you'll notice a considerable difference. I did :) I think for the money you can't beat canidae, hands down compared to nutro. I think it's a much better food. Just my opinion. My dogs all did great on canidae and were on it for quite some time. I switched to TWO wild n natural, grain-free, one of my boxers has a problem with grains. I think the canidae paws would be the one to go with. You can feed puppys or seniors. Let us know how you make out!!

While I think Canidae is the far superior food by a long shot, I know that Nutro Ultra is more appealing to dogs.  Roxie wasn't fond of Canidae, but loved the Ultra.  You may be able to get Canidae cheaper than Ultra, depending on where you live.  It's cheaper here than Ultra.

If your dog is doing well on the Ultra, it may be best to stick with it.  That will probably get me flamed, but I don't care.  I learned this the hard way, because I realized that the best food for Roxie was what SHE wanted, not what I wanted.

Roxie is right.  Use what is best for your dog!  Don't change just because someone says "oh, this food is better than that one."  I won't hurt to try the Canidae, and if it doesn't work, you can always go back to Nutro Ultra.

Taste honestly depends on the dog. When I switched Eevee from Nutro Ultra to Canidae, she went NUTS for the Canidae. To this day, she'll practically do backflips for a kibble. She wouldn't do that with the Nutro lol...

The reason I switched is because Eevee wasn't losing weight on the Ultra, and it was awfully grain-heavy... Canidae is less so. Nutro also has fake Vitamin K, and I read somewhere that the place they get their fish from puts ethoxyquin in it before shipping. Also, I prefer "chicken meal" to "poultry meal."

I was considering feeding the Ultra to Jessie before I learned about her allergy to chicken, but I was concerned about the possibility of etoxyquin in the salmon meal, so I called thier number. I learned on the phone that thier salmon meal is imported from Chile, which meant it was a virtual certainty that it had ethoxyquin but the person on the phone really didn't know. It took a few e-mails to them but I learned that the salmon meal does have ethoxyquin.

I have not used Nutro Ultra, because of their use of menadione, ethoxyquin and generic sources like "poultry", but I have used Canidae and was very happy with the results and the dogs liked it too.

Thanks for the imputs...I really appreciate it!!! I' m really wanting to use the Canidae ALS but the problem here where I live in Kentucky, is  I've searched high & low & short of ordering through the net can't located it. I was a little uncertain about ordering online due to possibly getting expired product, not to mention really outragous s/h chgs. Any suggestions on this matter?? I found the Canidae ALS online through petfooddirect.com for ( I believe $ 5.99 per 5lb. bag, just right size to try) but s/h chgs. were $9.99 it's ridiculous!!! Has anyone used pfd. to order?Satisfied/Unsatisfied??? Thanks for your help!!

Try Amazon. PFD sells through them, but for some reason the shipping charges are significantly less, to here anyhow. I live in California, so obviously we're in totally different parts of the country, but it's worth checking anyway. The only thing that annoys me about Amazon is you have to go almost all the way through with ordering (it doesn't actually order until you get through like 7 pages, and click "confirm order") before it tells you the total order amount, including shipping, but if you've ordered through them before, your information should be stored, so you really just have to click through. I've never ordered from Pet Food Direct, but I know lots here have, and have been satisfied for the most part.

Tip: If you sign up with petfooddirect they will regularly email you coupons. It's only worthwhile ordering from them when they send you a 20% off coupon, which they do quite often. Takes care of the shipping charges and more.

Do you live in Louisville? There is one store in Louisville that carries more premium dog foods, although you still can't get Canidae for some reason. I'll look up the store if ya do, I'm being a little lazy right now.

Well, most of the board's members have admitted to their dog disliking Canidae.  That was what I meant, though I should have clarified.

And the Ultra uses chicken meal as the first ingredient, not poultry meal.  They do use poultry fat, though.

I'm glad your dog was a fan of Canidae, because it's a very good food.  It's a shame mine thought it was bland.

Boxermom1...I can tell you that right now a 40lb bag of Canidae Lamb and Rice is on sale through PFD or Amazon for 18.99 (thanks Sooner for this tip off). If you go through Amazon, the shipping is muuccchhhhh cheaper.

Normally, my store sells Canidae for 39.99 a bag so its a really good deal. I can buy 4 bags (I have mastiffs) including shipping for only $114..where I would pay around $170 at the store for the same amount, plus I don't have to drive an hour one way to get it and it is brought right to my door.

I can also tell you that my dogs are going nuts for the Canidae ALS.

I am feeding Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato and have started mixing in the Canidae (since that is what I am going to try feeding for a while) and they are scarfing it down. Its funny because they are leaving some in the bowl and its all Wellness..they're picking out the Canidae and leaving the Wellness behind.

Time will tell if they continue to like it, but right now it's a BIG hit. My male even went to the Canidae bag and was nudging it, begging for more. I also like that the bags have an easy pour spout that is re-sealable. Its pretty cool.
