    Picky eater

I have a 3 year old female Pomeranian that I got a 1 1/2 years ago from a lady that I believe was abusing her. I also have a 3 year old male Pom. I was told she was sterile when I got her. She never did eat much (maybe 1/4 cup every couple of days). I tried everything from switching kibble to broths to mixing yogurt, boiled eggs and ricotta cheese with the kibble. She loves the yogurt boiled eggs and ricotta cheese but leaves the kibble behind. The only time I can get her to drink is from a cup in my hand and then it is a small amount. She is scared of everybody but loves to play with other dogs but will only interact outside. My groomer says she thinks she was a kennel dog. Anyway, I came home last Saturday afternoon and the male and female were tied and she is in heat. She is so small you can feel her hip bones. Now I am worried there are puppies involved. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get her to eat and drink more? The vet has not been able to find anything wrong with her.

Personally, first, I would take her and have her spayed now. She's obviously not in shape to have puppies, and I'm doubtful that your dogs should be bred anyway (no offense, but with so many millions of homeless dogs, unless a dog is well bred, shown, health tested, etc., it should not be bred).

Then I would try some really high quality foods, try canned if she won't eat it dry. Some great foods are Innova, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, Timberwolf Organics, and more. You say your vet can't find anything wrong with her, I'm hoping that means they've run a full blood panel? It's possible that she's really just super-picky, but I'm wondering if there's not some underlying reason for it.

I couldnt agree more. Please, please, please take her in to the vet asap and get her spayed.By the sounds of things the last thing this poor little dog needs is puppies too look after and drain more of her resources from her. What would you do if you lost momma and maybe her pups during the birth, you would never forgive yourself,or she could reject the pups which would leave you to hand feed them every couple of hours day and night and be their sole provider etc.Leave breeding up to the qualified breeders, and enjoy your girl as the pet she was meant to be.

Have you tried  super premium kibbles/canned or the supermarket stuff [:'(] ? You could try adding some salt free chicken broth to her water to encourage her to drink.

I'm going to agree with the others.  If she is underweight, having a litter of puppies is going to be extremely hard on her, possibly fatal.  It would be better to end it now than riskin the life of her and the puppies.  I normally would not like to see that happen, but it is really in the best interest of the mother dog.
