    Nature's Variety raw bone question

    So, I'm a tad confused.
I got Ella a lamb bone RMB, and I'm pretty sure she isn't to actually consume the bone. BUT, what is safe?
She wants to bite the ends of and sounds like she could. How should I go about this?
Just give her the bone and allow her to chew on it and if she breaks some off, oh well?
I mean, the thing has meat on the ends, but she REALLY sounds like she's trying to break that bone off. What's ok?

I want to add that it looks like a leg bone and I'm just afraid that she'll break her teeth off even though she's pretty careful.
If she can break through the ends is it ok to allow her to do this?

    Hi,

recreational bones are meant to be gnawed on, not really eat.  if I see Romeo really trying to break a piece off of his or if I hear any crack sound instead of crunch, crunch.  I take it away.  does this help?

My dogs eat the ends off the lamb bones and then start licking the marrow out of the center..when they start to break that center piece I toss it out.

Ok, so it's OK to let her chew off and break the ends to get to the marrow inside?
I heard the marrow was good for them, but I didn't know how exactly they were supposed to get the marrow if they weren't allowed to break the bone.

I agree with maisey and olinda; Once I gave Jessie a beef marrow bone from the grocery store ; it was about 5 inches long and 2 inches wide, very thick walled with marrow in the middle. She took it outside to chew it and I checked on her frequently. She was doing fine until she had eaten all the marrow she could easily get to; the last time I checked on her she was breaking pieces of bone off the inside walls to get to the marrow further down so I took the bone away. The next day when she passed stool it had bone chips in it and she was uncomfortable for a little while afterwards. It was the first marrow bone I've given her and I didn't know that her jaws were stong enough to break pieces off such a thick walled bone.

I'm just saying that's what I do with my dogs. Everyone has their own comfort zone. I don't buy the four inch long weight bearing marrow bones anymore, the dogs try to break them to get at the marrow they can't reach and it seems like it may be too much marrow for them as their stools get loose. I stick with the two inch long ones. I don't offer ham bones anymore because it always leads to the runs. I'm not always sure what a bone is called..sometimes they are shaped weird..but I can now tell the difference between a bone they can eat and one thats just for chewing on.
