    feeding raw

strange question but where do you give your dog raw food?  If I put a chicken back in his bowl, he'd pick it up take it into the living room for inspection before eating it.  I don't want him to eat in his crate.  When I give him raw soup bones he will not eat them outside so he sits in our sunroom blocked in on a piece of carpet.  I can't see myself allowing him to eat raw meat this way.
So where do you give them the food?  Do they eat it out of their bowls or is it something they need to lie down and tuck into?

we are now giving him Natural Balance Venison but it is too low in protein for him so we are going to supplement with meat & fish.  I know raw is best so if I can work something out raw it will be.

I feed it in their crates. You could also feed outside, or teach him to stay on a towel or mat. You can take the bedding out of the crate, and spray it when he's done, if you're worried about germs.

Kitchen floor. And I not only wipe every spot the raw touched with several clorox wipes, but I also mop the kitchen floor every day.
    Crazy, huh?

He is unfussy about nearly everything but I can't see him eating in his crate.  He won't even eat the stuff out of a kong in there.  If you hand him a treat for going in there he will eat that.  If you put it down he will not.
He won't eat a bone outside not going to eat a chicken (unless he hunted it!)
And this is a dog that sees all in life as food.
He is still struggling with allergies - they seem environmental now - but he still has some food issues thus the NB.
He's a monstrous chewer so I think once he got the hang of it it would be fine

I feed in crates (though I feed some on the back porch and in the kitchen).  I have a small tank garden sprayer (the kind you pump) with antiseptic cleaner.  It's kind of overkill but not with as many dogs as I feed.

I thought about that but we have 3 entry ways to block off - he will want to take it somewhere - guaranteed

Why don't you just try it in his crate? You need to sit and watch him, anyways. You're not going to shut him in and walk away. Just ask him to go to his crate, and hand him a chicken wing. Shut the door, and watch him, to see what he does.

Ella won't eat in her crate. She'll go in there, but she thinks I'm leaving if she goes into her crate and must get sad or too distracted to eat or something. She just won't eat.

You need to teach him where it is acceptable to eat his food.  Start by leashing him before you feed him.  If he tries to walk away from his bowl with food tell him No and lead him back to the bowl.  If he drops the food CAREFULLY pick it up (be 110% SURE your dog has no food aggression issues) and put it back in his bowl.

Most dogs learn quickly that they only get to eat if they stay at their bowl.

I feed my boys outside.  I put the raw food in their bowels and take them outside and put the bowels down.  Jake (cane corso) eats right over his bowel.  Sergeant (doberman) takes is food and lays down on the grass to eat it.

I do the exact same thing, minus the mopping

If it is meat: eats out of his bowl.  If it is bones: eats on a polypropylene picnic blanket on the kitchen floor  if it is a pretty day on my porch on the blanket.  When he is done I wash and spary antibacterial cleaner and hose down again.

Their normal raw meals are lightly ground and they eat them over their bowls, but if it's a turkey neck or something along those lines my dogs have been taught to eat them on camp pads I bought at walmart and cut in half. They are easy to clean and roll up nice for storage. It was really easy to train mine to eat onyl on the mat. As soon as one of them picked it up and started to move I said AHH and put it back. When he did it again I said "Bummer" and put it back in the freezer. I sat and watched TV for about 10 minutes while he tried to figure out what the heck had caused that bone to be put back in the freezer. (I wish I had pictures of my other dogs face while this was going on..he was simply horrified) I gave the bone back in the same way I had the first time. This time when I said AHHH..he put it back and laid down. I only had to actually take the bone away a couple of times and it was always with the same dog..the others seemed to learn by example. On nice days I do let them have bones in the backyard, but one of my guys hates it when grass and dirt get on his food, he tries to shake it off. Wierd but true. I like laurics idea for training them to eat at their bowl, it's straight forward. I do think if your dog was only given his food in his crate..he would learn thats the only place he gets it, when he was hungry enough..he would eat. I don't like feeding raw in a crate because then I have to clean the crate..it's much easier to clean a mat or the floor than crawl around with your head in a crate. JMO.

Stupid question but my dog is also on NB venison and brown rice. He's a cocker spaniel, 1-1/2 years old. I thought about the low protein but how do you know if he needs more protein? Do they have less energy?

All of my dogs are fed in crates. I like for mealtime to be relaxed, and feeding them in their crates takes away the defensiveness and guarding (from each other). Not to mention easy cleanup. Only one of mine gets raw full time, and when she's done I just slide her tray out, treat with either bleach and water, or a solution of apple cider vinegar, tee tree oil, and water, and then slide it back in to dry.

PS - I have my very own comfy chair in the dog room. I like to watch them eat.
