Purina ProPlan Selects

Does anyone use this food? My puppy was eating the regular Purina ProPlan while under the care of the breeder. When I read about all the disgusting things contained in dog food I decided that I wanted something better for my baby. All those byproducts - YUCK! He's just about 4 months old now. [

When I heard about Purina ProPlan Selects, I immediately switched him to it thinking it was better. But, I don't know HOW bad they are.

Is this a bad food? I just want to feed my puppy good food without causing any tummy problems from switching. [

The things I consider really objectionable are the animal fat and the menadione. This is by far the best food Purina makes, it's still low on meat though.

Honestly I dont see a huge difference between One (what I feed) and any variety of Pro Plan. Its still low grade- mid grade food.

I think you should take advantage of having a small dog, even The most expensive food will be a reasonable price since a small bag will do.

Im feeding a 30 pound puppy, and a 70lb adult, and a 4lb bag lasts 3 days!

I just want to feed him good food, not low-grade food. There's just SO many different brands and so much different stuff that I read that it's just not simplified enough I suppose.

It's not just you. It reminds me of some mutant clown face [sm=eek.gif]

There is a pretty big difference in the Selects and the One. Selects don't have by-products, wheat, or animal digest.

Well, that's good to know at least. I noticed there's still corn in it which I read isn't too great, among other ingredients listed in there. Do you think I should switch him?

Corn isn't necessarily bad unless your dog has a sensitivity to it. The problem comes when the corn gluten meal (which is very high in protein) is the main source of protein in the food instead of the meat. Corn gluten meal does (arguably) have its benefits, but I don't like to see it as the third ingredient when the first ingredient is a water-inclusive meat. When that turkey cooks down it may loose 70-80% of its volume. Turkey 'meal' would already be dehydrated so it would stay the same during processing. Personally I choose not to feed foods containing menadione or generic sources like 'animal' or 'poultry'. But this is not really a *bad* food, it just doesn't have enough meat in it IMO.

I'm just going to quote myself from what I posted in the Kibbles n Bits thread:

Although Purina is at the high end of nutrition of low end dog foods it's still packed with stuff that is not good for dogs. It's like comparing fast food restraints, yeah, some are better for you then others but they will never compare to nice gourmet high end restaurant foods.

You really have to experment to find the right food for your dog. I've turned to doing a half cooked meal, I buy the meat and other stuff from the store, cook it, and then add suppliments and then add that to half a bowl of Kibble. Thats what works so far for my dog but I'm still not getting it just the way I want it, I may just take out the kibble and do a cooked only diet. No one ever get the food right the first time when they are learning and every dog is different in what they need as far as nutrition goes.

My dog was on Beneful when I got him and now he is on Purina one Chicken. I have noticed a difference and I too am think of switching to Pro or atleast going to the Salmon Formula next. Harley doesn't do well on Nutro and other high end foods. I have to keep him on mid grade.

He has isssues digesting the better foods, he gets diarhea and his stomach makes all sorts of noises and he vomits it. I have tried to change for a month but he did poorly on it. He does fine with Purina one so I am sticking with Purina right now.

Hey if it works for you dog, Then that is the best food for him

I believe in feeding whatever works, not just b/c something is "better"

I agree with the other posts- Pro Selects is better, but still not a great food as far as the ingredients. I really like Timberwolf Organics so that's the food I'd recommend trying. [

By the way, your puppy is adorable! Is he a Shih Tzu? I couldn't tell for sure by the picture.

Me too. My cats are eating Science Diet at the moment [&:], because they didn't do well on Innova or Felidae, but I haven't given up. I'm giving them a while back on SD, and then I'm gonna try something else, and see how they do.

What I didn't understand was "I have to keep him on mid-grade". Not a specific brand, but as if any mid-grade (or, IMO, low-grade) would be fine, but any of the better foods aren't fine. That didn't make any sense to me. Now that she's said Purina specifically, I'm staying out of it...

Some dogs cannot handle the "premium-grade" foods. Roxie did not do well on Innova. As far as stools, it was her worst food. This was a gradual switch and the typical song-and-dance associated with food switches, not a sudden 100% Innova switch. It just didn't agree with her. I can see why someone would only stick with a mid-grade. [sm=2cents.gif]
