    Costco Organic Dog Food

    Hi,

For the last few months I've noticed that Costco is now selling Organic Dog Food. I just skimmed the ingredients but saw the first ingredient was organic chicken. Currently I feed my dogs the Kirkland Lamb and Rice and they are doing well on it. But I'm curious has anyone made the switch yet to the organic brand food? Did your dog(s) like it the same as the normal Kirkland brand?

I have never used either one, so don't know much about them.  But i am sure someone where will know about it.

I've also never used either one, but, in general, organic meat is so outrageously expensive that the foods end up very grain-heavy. Organic chicken would be a water-inclusive ingredient, so when it is cooked it could loose up to 80% of its weight, putting it much lower on the ingredient list. Chicken 'meal' would already have the water removed, but I've never seen a meal in an organic food. The two organic foods that I am familiar with have 7-9 grains and 1-2 meat sources. Do you have the ingredients for the Costco food?

Edited to add: (Just saw this on another thread) The Costco organic canned looks good, but they don't use organic anything except turkey...Organic Turkey, Turkey Broth, Turkey Liver, Brown Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Tricalcium Phosphate, Oat Bran, Cranberries, Flaxseed, Dried Kelp, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Potassium Chloride, Sea Salt, Minerals (Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Sodium Selenite, Potassium Iodide), Choline Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E, A, B12, D3 Supplements, Thiamin Mononitrate, Biotin, Riboflavin Supplement).

I have never seen the organic one at costco. The greyhound rescue I volunteer with occasionally uses the Kirkland Lamb and rice if they don't have any dog food donations because feeding 30 dogs can get pricey! [sm=uhoh.gif] The dogs all seem to do well on the formula, and while the ingredients aren't fantastic, they aren't that bad either.

I agree with sooner. . . the canned looks pretty good, but I don't see a whole lot of "organic" ingredients.

    Hi,

I went to Costco today and looked again at the dog food. The first ingredient was organic chicken, then chicken meal (which struck me as odd cause there was no organic before it), then organic rice (??), organic oats (???) okay, I'm not sure the grains listed but they were all organic. The only other thing that stood out to me was the egg product was not listed as organic.

I live in California so maybe they sell different stuff per state. I've never seen the organic canned meat--just the regular Kirkland canned meat. I use that too--mix it w/ the dry.

And finally the price. It's 17.99 for a 25lb bag. I pay 17.99 for a 40lb bag of Lamb/Rice. They are in fact right next to each other at the store.

Right now I think I'll stay on Lamb. My vet even commented how good my dogs' fur looked, and I prefer lamb over chicken. I had bought a bag of the regular ks chicken kibble and thought the pieces were way to small for my large dogs' mouths. That being said, I prefer organic foods myself so I am glad to see organic as an option now.

Yeah, I think there are better options out there for organic dog foods. Because of water weight the chicken meal is probably the main ingredient in the food, and it's not even organic. Natura's [linkhttp://www.karmaorganic.com/]Karma[/link] is a good one if you decide to look at more organic foods in the future.

When we first got Jake we fed him Kirklands 'chicken and Rice, it has Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, egg product, beet pulp, chicken fat, potato`s,fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, on and on.
Now we feed him Innova, and he`s beautiful, shiny glossy coat.
