Doesn't the market determine whether or not they are overcharging?

Tell that to the oil companies!

Tell that to the oil companies!

    LOL
    • Gold Top Dog
I always chuckle whenever someone says all a company cares about is making money. Like, DUH!

Billy as i said to "you know who" when she posed nearly that exact same question to me,the companies i take issue with are the ones who put profit ahead of everything else, knowingly putting terrible and cheap ingredients in their foods all in the name of making an even bigger profit,ie the cheaper the ingredients, the more $$$ they make! The health of the animals they are feeding comes last, they make sure they put in enough of this and that so the animals can survive and not drop dead of malnutrition related problems etc.,but IMHO opinion this is as far as they are prepared to go!

Ofcourse every companies main objective is to  make a profit, but there are those that can achieve this AND put out a reputable healthful product, natura being a good example, they dont pour their profits into huge marketing scams, they instead put it into the quality of their foods. The less reputable companies put their profits into sucking the public in with huge advertising campaigns instead of putting it into making a better food.

LOL.  No chit.  Gas is up to $2.59 here and oil was up again today.  But, if you remember the late 1970's or early 1980's, and the death of the "muscle" car, I think you could reasonably conclude that consumers can affect gasoline prices too.  We do it by buying less gasoline.
    • Gold Top Dog
Well, but now we have the NEW version of the muscle car...the giant 2 mpg SUVs......yep, I've got a big van...a full sized dodge, BUT it's a 6 cyclinder so better on gas.  And my motor home moved once after we found a place to park it after we moved up HERE, and that was just to move from one house to another.  Hasn't moved other than to relocate it in the yard since August and won't until May when we take it to the new house.  If we don't sell it this summer, will just be a glorified guest room until we do, cuz I'll pitch a tent before I fill  THAT tank up for play!
    • Gold Top Dog
You're exactly right, Glenda.  We never learn.  We downsize our military after every war and we buy gas guzzlers after every oil "crisis."

Gas is up to $2.59 here

Sorry to go OT,but is that 2.59 a litre or gallon? We're paying around $1.30 a litre,it's never been that high! When you guys say "gas" are you actually talking about gas? Alot of people get their cars that take petrol converted into gas coz it's much cheaper, around 50 cents a litre. But the vast majority of cars run on unleaded "petrol". To fill up a car that runs on gas you have to "screw" the nozzle onto the petrol thingy and actual gas shoots out, whereas petrol is liquid. Sorry to rave,i've just always wondered what exactly you guys are talking about when you say gas.

I think 1 litre equals around 0.28 gallons.
    • Gold Top Dog
In my part of Texas, we are paying $2.59 US for a gallon of unleaded gasoline.
    • Gold Top Dog
your petrol is the same thing we call gas, it's liquid and $2.59 a gallon here in the US, and fuels our cars

The thing you guys ( christine) is natural gas which is a liquid but burned in vapors, we use it for heating our homes and cooking most cases.

Make sense or did I confuse you more.
I hope not........ he he he he
    • Gold Top Dog
Dang!  Ours went up today, to 2.75.  Of course, the weather is wonderful, and it's been a long winter, so come Thursday they jack the price up for the tourists and the heck with locals who  might need more before Tuesday when they drop it back down a few pennies.....
    • Gold Top Dog
Christine, sounds like you're paying about $5.00 for gasoline?  Mein Gott!!

Now.. on the other hand... the independent pet food manufacturers are working on a completely different premise. They are not creating food as a way to dispose of and make a profit from waste products. They are actually manufacturing food based on trying to create a convenient and nutritious product that will sustain and improve the health of our pets. That is why all of their money goes into ingredients and not 'lies and hype'. We are really talking about two COMPLETELY different industries here working on two completely different premises.  One cares about pets... the other cares about the bottom line and could give a rats u know what about your pet or they wouldn't be manufacturing garbage in a bag.

    Somehow I have to wonder!
I think they both care about the bottom line, but they are just focusing on different people with different wants.
    • Gold Top Dog
    I agree with you.

And here's an exception to the big advertising equals big success rule. In 2003, ASW, an independent marketing research firm that does auditing for pet supply stores, published a finding that in 2001 and 2002, Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice outsold all other brands. With no national advertising campaign. Just word of mouth and direct info from maker to seller. No cute commercials, no major sponsorship of an AKC show. And they were one of the first to adopt AAFCO guidelines and one of the first to start supplementing especially the lamb formula with taurine, so that owners with breeds that have taurine deficiencies could still feed it to their dogs if they were already doing fine on it. That ain't bad for a "mid-grade, grainy" food out to make a buck.

True, most people only buy what they see on a commercial, if they even think that much. Many just buy whatever has the lowest sticker price in the grocery store. Or, what their vet says, which is a whole 'nother discussion.

Agree with Dyan, anyone in business care about their bottom line regardless of how they feel about the animals.
