    constipation

After I feed Nature's Variety raw frozen to my dog, he likes it but got constipation.  Then I mix with pumpkin but he doesn't really like it.  Sometimes he sniffed it and won't eat.  Is there anything that I can substitue the pumpkin with?  Can I just use the veggies instead of pumpkin?  Any advice would be much appreciated.

If he will eat some fresh veggies, that might help, or, and I'm just throwing this out there and will probably get slammed for it, BUT, add a little of the canned for one meal a day. The pre-made raw your using has ground bone in it and it's probably too much for his system when fed as the only source of nutrition.

Thanks Kennel_keeper.  The fresh veggies you meant is cooked or uncooked? Sometimes I would add tripett or other canned food to it.  But he only eats half a cup per meal, I can't add too much other stuff to it.  Otherwise it would be too much for him.

Why would you get slammed for that?I think it's a good idea[:)]

Well, you never can tell on here... [;)]

Adjust your quantities or use one meal raw and one meal canned. If you add the veggies/fruits I would use them raw if he'll eat them that way.

I have read lately that you can use the powdered Metamucil mixed in with food to help with "regularity" in dogs, but I have never tried it. It does make sense though.

Maybe if we combine our problems, our dogs could come out with normal bowel movements.

I'm just asking here...are you sure he is constipated? or is it just a really firm bowel movement? Sometimes when people start out on raw they are shocked by the difference in stool.

Yeah, I was going to say that dogs usually poops less when eating raw.
WHEN I was feeding Ella part raw, she was going once a day and sometimes every other day, but when she went, it was nice and formed and easy to pick up off the grass. Just like when I was feeding her timberwolf.

Yes, I know he would have less quantity and firm stool.  Sometimes I saw him try to go but nothing came out.  When I mixed with pumpkin, he went easily.
